A powerful storm struck Sultanpur district on Wednesday, leaving seven people dead and 21 others injured, officials said.
Multiple areas across the district, including Baldirai, Haliyapur, Akhand Nagar, Bandhua Kala, and Kudwar, were hit by strong winds and rain. The storm led to house collapses, falling trees, and several other accidents.
The storm also caused widespread damage to electricity infrastructure, destroying more than 50 transformers and several power poles, resulting in major disruptions in power supply.
According to an India Today report, one of the victims, 20-year-old Mahendra Tiwari from Kudwar, died on the spot after an electricity pole fell on him.
He had returned home just 10 days earlier from out of town for his sister’s wedding scheduled for May 7 and was on his way to attend a pre-wedding function when the incident occurred.
District Magistrate Indrajeet Singh said that restoration work is underway and the electricity department has been mobilised to address the situation.
Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Singh said, "Around 3 PM today, a very powerful storm struck, in which seven people were killed, and 21 others were injured."
