Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government in West Bengal on Saturday, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said voters backed change and fulfilled the dream of Syama Prasad Mukherjee.

He said the electorate rejected the All India Trinamool Congress and the Indian National Congress, accusing them of oppressing people and misusing power.

“We struggled for a long time, and finally the public voted for change. The dream of Syama Prasad Mukherjee has been fulfilled. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Indian National Congress were rejected by the public because they oppressed the people and misused their power. The public gave them a befitting reply and elected the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),” Ghosh told reporters.

Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the West Bengal BJP Legislative Party, is scheduled to be sworn in as chief minister later on Saturday, ushering in the party’s first government in the state.

The BJP secured 207 seats in the assembly elections, paving the way for Adhikari to become the state’s first BJP chief minister.

Union ministers Rajnath Singh, J. P. Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan, along with Manik Saha and Himanta Biswa Sarma, arrived in Kolkata on Friday to attend the ceremony. Several senior BJP leaders are also expected to be present.

Earlier on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced Adhikari as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party in West Bengal after chairing a meeting in Kolkata.

“I announce the name of Suvendu Adhikari elected as Leader of West Bengal BJP Legislative Party,” Shah said.

Soon after the announcement, Adhikari met Governor R. N. Ravi and formally staked claim to form the government. Senior BJP leaders, including Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee and Tapas Roy, accompanied him to Lok Bhavan.

Adhikari expressed gratitude to BJP national president Nitin Nabin and Home Minister Amit Shah.

“With the blessings of the Prime Minister, I have been elected as the Leader of the Legislative Party. I have received support from all MLAs. There is democracy in the BJP. We will fulfil the commitments made during the elections for the organisation and the public,” he said.

Adhikari won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur seats in the 2026 elections. Repeating his 2021 victory in Nandigram, he defeated outgoing chief minister Mamata Banerjee from Bhabanipur by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.
