Rs 10,000 crore at stake? Why Delhi traders want Rahul Gandhi’s rally postponed

What happens when a major political rally lands in the middle of the year’s busiest shopping season? Delhi’s traders are worried about precisely that collision. With Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj approaching, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has written to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asking him to reschedule the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan.
In its letter, CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal warned that road closures, barricades and possible restrictions on public transport could deter shoppers and disrupt the movement of goods. The traders’ body wants the rally held after November 10, when the main festive shopping period will have passed.
Why are Delhi traders asking Rahul Gandhi to postpone the November 1 rally?
The concern is financial as much as logistical. According to a report by The Tribune on October 24, CTI estimates that the rally could put around ₹10,000 crore worth of business at risk during the festive period. The organisation says Delhi’s markets begin seeing heavier customer traffic well before the main festival dates. Dhanteras falls on November 6 this year, followed by Diwali on November 8 and Bhai Dooj on November 10.

The making of a medical and social emergency
CTI estimates that Dhanteras alone generates around ₹25,000 crore in business across sectors including gold and silver, electronics, clothing, utensils, sweets, dry fruits and automobiles. These are estimates cited by the traders’ body, rather than independently verified loss figures.
Which Delhi markets could be affected by the Ramlila Maidan rally?
The venue sits within reach of some of the capital’s major wholesale and retail hubs. CTI has highlighted around 20 markets within a five-kilometre radius, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Khari Baoli, Bhagirath Palace, Dariba Kalan, Kashmere Gate, Chawri Bazaar and Karol Bagh. These markets serve both local shoppers and buyers who travel to Delhi from other parts of the country. Traders fear that traffic diversions and congestion could make it harder for customers to reach shops and for wholesalers to move goods.
The proximity of Old Delhi Railway Station and New Delhi Railway Station adds to their concerns, particularly for outstation visitors planning festive purchases.
Why does CTI say Delhi traders have already lost ₹3,000 crore?
In its letter, CTI claimed that road closures and diversions linked to earlier demonstrations around Connaught Place, India Gate and central Delhi had already cost traders approximately ₹3,000 crore in October.
The body argued that another large gathering could compound the disruption just as businesses prepare for peak demand. The estimate reflects CTI’s assessment; it has not been independently established.
What is Rahul Gandhi’s November 1 rally about?
The INDIA bloc rally is part of the Opposition’s campaign over alleged “vote chori” and its criticism of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Delhi Police had granted Congress permission to hold the rally at Ramlila Maidan. As of October 24, no postponement had been announced.
CTI has acknowledged political parties’ right to hold rallies, but says the timing matters. Whether Congress accepts the request, the clash between political mobilisation and festive commerce has put Delhi’s traders and the Opposition’s campaign on a potential collision course.
