QUICK TAKE | Why Videocon’s Loans Left Venugopal Dhoot Bankrupt. Seven Things to Know

1. What did the tribunal decide?
On November 5, the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal declared Venugopal Nandlal Dhoot bankrupt under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. It admitted State Bank of India’s petition and appointed Asish Narayan as bankruptcy trustee to administer Dhoot’s estate.
2. Why could SBI pursue Dhoot personally?
Dhoot signed personal guarantees for credit facilities extended to Videocon Industries, including term loans, working capital and facilities linked to Videocon Telecommunications. Those guarantees gave lenders a route to demand payment from him when the borrower defaulted. The lenders invoked the guarantees in February 2018.
3. What does the ₹12,668-crore figure represent?
It is the amount SBI said was in default as of September 30, 2026, including interest and penalties. The bank attributed roughly ₹9,322 crore to rupee term loans, ₹1,438 crore to facilities linked to Videocon Telecommunications and ₹1,908 crore to working capital facilities.
4. What did Dhoot offer creditors?
He proposed paying ₹600 crore over 36 months using proceeds from a planned property development in Siliguri. The proposal offered no upfront payment. Creditors would have had to wait for approvals, development and cash flows from a project that had yet to generate the money.

5. How did that proposal lead to bankruptcy?
The resolution professional reported that Dhoot had prepared the plan without consulting him, as the code required. Creditors declined to approve it. On July 17, the tribunal rejected the plan and ended the personal insolvency resolution process, opening the way for SBI’s bankruptcy petition.
6. How does this relate to Videocon’s own insolvency?
Videocon Industries entered corporate insolvency in June 2018, and its case was consolidated with proceedings involving other group companies. SBI pursued Dhoot separately. The November order deals with his obligations as guarantor and puts his estate under the trustee’s control.
7. What does the trustee have to do?
Dhoot must give the trustee a statement of his financial position within seven days. The trustee must notify creditors, invite claims and submit a preliminary report within 90 days. The trustee will administer and distribute the bankruptcy estate under the code.
