Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired one of the most significant Cabinet meetings of his third term on Thursday, May 21 -- a session that stretched nearly four and a half hours at Seva Teertha in New Delhi. The meeting brought together the full Council of Ministers for the first time this year, functioning as a deliberate midterm stocktaking as the NDA government approaches two years in its third consecutive term.
Nine ministries including Agriculture, Labour, Road Transport, Corporate Affairs, Commerce, and Power made detailed presentations on their achievements and forward roadmaps. The Cabinet Secretary and NITI Aayog also presented during the session. Ministries that ranked lower in performance evaluations were reportedly advised to take corrective measures.
Modi made the government's long-term vision the centrepiece of the meeting, directing ministers to treat Viksit Bharat as a binding commitment rather than a political slogan. He stressed faster decision-making, reduced file delays, and maximum productivity. In a post on X the following morning, the Prime Minister described deliberations as "fruitful," adding that ministers exchanged perspectives on boosting ease of living and ease of doing business.
The meeting was not limited to domestic governance. According to India Today, Modi flagged the ongoing West Asia crisis and its economic impact, directing ministries to ensure minimum inconvenience to citizens. Sectors including energy, agriculture, fertilisers, aviation, and logistics received focused attention during discussions.

India navigates global economic turmoil with austerity and smart diplomacy
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed the full Council on Modi's recently concluded tour spanning the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy, as per India Today. The visit yielded commitments worth USD 5 billion from the UAE and a special strategic partnership with Italy, among several other diplomatic outcomes.
According to a BJP leader, Modi urged ministries to simplify governance, reach out actively to the public, and highlight twelve years of government achievements, as per ANI. The Council of Ministers, which includes 30 Cabinet ministers, five ministers of state with independent charge, and 36 ministers of state, now has an unambiguous mandate: deliver on Viksit Bharat or face scrutiny at the next review.
