Calling it the most advantageous trade agreement India has secured so far, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the India–US trade deal marks a historic turning point that prioritises national interest and unlocks massive economic opportunities.
What Is the India–US Trade Deal?
The India–US trade agreement, announced following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, reduces tariffs on Indian exports to the United States and deepens economic cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.
A key outcome of the deal is the reduction of US tariffs on Made-in-India products to 18 per cent, improving market access for Indian businesses.
Why Piyush Goyal Calls It India’s Best Deal Yet
Addressing a press conference, Goyal said the agreement is better than trade deals secured by India’s competitors and neighbouring countries, asserting that India’s interests were given primacy during negotiations.
He credited Prime Minister Modi’s close diplomatic engagement with President Trump for finalising what he described as a “great deal” for the country.
Who Benefits From the Deal?
According to Goyal, the agreement unlocks unprecedented opportunities for:
a) Farmers through expanded export markets
b) MSMEs via better global integration

India and European Union amp up their partnership in a world unsettled by Trump
c) Entrepreneurs and startups through technology access
d) Skilled workers through global value-chain participation
The deal also strengthens India’s push to Make in India, Design in India and Innovate in India for the world.
Technology, Innovation and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’
Goyal emphasised that the agreement is not just about trade volumes but also about technology transfer and co-development.
He said the partnership will help India access advanced US technologies, co-create solutions, and accelerate the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.
Political Row Over Parliamentary Statement
The Commerce Minister said the government had intended to brief Parliament on the deal but could not do so due to disruptions by opposition parties.
He criticised the Congress and its allies, accusing them of preventing a parliamentary discussion and forcing the government to address the media instead.
PM Modi and President Trump React
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the agreement, thanking President Trump for reducing tariffs on Indian goods and calling it a boost for India’s 1.4 billion people.
He said cooperation between two large economies and democracies unlocks immense opportunities for shared growth, peace, and prosperity.
Part of a broader trade Push
The India–US trade deal comes shortly after India concluded a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, underscoring New Delhi’s broader strategy to deepen global trade ties and diversify export markets.
