Why Is PM Modi's New Record Significant?

The achievement marks a landmark moment in India's democratic journey. By completing 4,399 uninterrupted days in office, Prime Minister Modi will surpass the record of 4,398 consecutive days served by Jawaharlal Nehru after India's first general election.

According to the MEA, the milestone reflects a period during which India's international engagement expanded considerably. In a post on X, the ministry stated, "Over the last 12 years, India's foreign policy has witnessed a remarkable transformation, strengthening both Brand India and India's standing on the global stage under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. From being the voice of the Global South to First Responder in times of crisis, from championing climate action through initiatives including International Solar Alliance to driving digital public goods such as UPI across borders, India has combined national interest with global good."

The ministry said India's diplomatic outreach, climate initiatives, digital public infrastructure and engagement with developing nations have contributed to a stronger global presence.

How Have World Leaders Responded to the Milestone?

Several world leaders used the occasion to acknowledge Modi's leadership and India's growing international role.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in a letter dated June 8, wrote: "This milestone is a testament not only to your years in office, but also to the trust and confidence that the people of the world's largest democracy have repeatedly placed in your leadership."

He also noted that India's economic and social transformation under PM Modi had inspired countries beyond India's borders, including Sri Lanka.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape described PM Modi as "a role model and an example of leadership." Highlighting India's development journey, he said, "Lifting over 200 million people out of poverty to a good life today is an amazing feat."

Marape also reiterated Papua New Guinea's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with India, recalling Modi's historic 2023 visit to the Pacific nation—the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister.

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said that "under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has evolved as a leading voice on global matters."

She highlighted India's progress in foreign policy, economic development, infrastructure expansion and social welfare, while also noting Modi's rise from humble beginnings to leading a nation of more than 1.4 billion people through three terms.

What Changes Does the Government Highlight From the Last 12 Years?

The government has pointed to both domestic and international achievements as evidence of India's transformation during Modi's tenure.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the period as one of "unprecedented transformation." He said, "On this day, PM Modi has established himself as the longest-serving democratically elected Prime Minister of India... India's domestic production rate has reached an average of 7% over the past 12 years, on the basis of which an unprecedented transformation has also occurred. This 12-year tenure will take India's direction, India's position, and India's prominence on the global stage to new heights."

Referring to flagship initiatives and infrastructure growth, Scindia added, "Whether it is the G20 presidency, International Yoga Day, or Vaccine Maitri... Whether we talk about national highways, which have increased to 1.5 lakh kilometres, in the field of civil aviation, we are going from 74 airports to 160, in the railway sector, there has been a fourfold increase in the development rate and capacity of railways."

Looking ahead, he said, "Unprecedented transformation has also come in social development... Today, the country is also advancing as the world's fourth-largest economy. India's path and goal are clear, 'Developed India 2047,' and the contribution of every Indian is essential to fully achieve it."

What Do Business Leaders Say About Modi's Leadership?

Among industry voices, Hiranandani Group Founder and Chairperson Niranjan Hiranandani described Modi's rise as an example of the strength of Indian democracy.

"We are extremely blessed that we have an able man who came from a common background... The democracy of India is the strongest in the world to be able to prove that a common person, a common man, is able to reach this position. Every attention that has been given by the rest of the world to India looks upon Prime Minister Modi with respect. All this has made the country stronger and able to face any sort of crisis that we have had," he said.

Reflecting on the Prime Minister's political journey, Hiranandani remarked, "Many people when they get into a platform have reached the highest level. In the years that our Prime Minister has been in the Prime Ministership, he has moved upwards year by year. So, all the 12 years that he has served our country, the difference is there to see."

He also pointed to economic growth and welfare programmes, saying, "The growth of GDP? Tremendous. The social ventures of getting to the people to see that they get food grains, they get the gas, they get all the things and all the ideas to reach the poorest of the poor have been unprecedented."

Highlighting the self-reliance initiative, he added, "Most importantly, Atmanirbar Bharat. He spoke much before the Middle East war, and today all that is holding us in good stead because we have moved in that direction... All this and more has changed the way the world looks at India. We are extremely blessed that we have an able man who came from a common background."

What Lies Ahead After This Historic Achievement?

Beyond the symbolism of the record, supporters argue that the milestone reflects India's evolving role in global affairs and its long-term development ambitions.

BJP MP Ashok Chavan said, "Prime Minister Modi has done excellent work during his tenure. He will continue to work in the same manner ahead... In all the states where elections were held, the BJP has won under Prime Minister Modi's leadership... The country's name has been elevated. We extend our very best wishes to him."

As Prime Minister Modi enters a new chapter in his tenure, the government and its supporters view the record not merely as a personal milestone but as a marker of India's broader economic, diplomatic and strategic ambitions on the global stage.
