In Guwahati, police are trying to piece together exactly that. Ramanuj Goswami, 30, has been arrested in connection with the death of his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar Goswami, after her body was discovered at the couple's home in the Beltola area. The case came to light after neighbours reportedly complained about a foul smell coming from the apartment, according to NDTV.

The details that emerged from the flat were grim. Police said Riya's body was found with her head severed, while her head was recovered separately from a refrigerator. Investigators also reported finding severed fingers. The body and other remains were sent for post-mortem examination as police began reconstructing what happened inside the home.

The couple had been married for only around six months, according to police accounts. Their relationship had reportedly been marked by frequent arguments, but investigators are still establishing the precise sequence of events leading to Riya's death.

According to The Indian Express, police believe an argument between the couple on September 3 escalated into the killing. The alleged trigger was an extramarital relationship that Goswami claimed his wife was involved in. That, however, is the accused's account and has not been independently established as fact. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances and motive.

That distinction is important because the most sensational part of the case so far — the reference to a supposed “sugar daddy” — comes from Goswami himself.

Why the accused's 'sugar daddy' claim has added another layer to the case

After his arrest, Goswami reportedly told reporters that he had no remorse for killing his wife and that he would not apologise. He also reportedly threatened to kill the man he described as his wife's “sugar daddy” if he was released from prison.

The identity of that alleged man has not been publicly established, and there is no independent confirmation in the reports that the relationship Goswami described actually existed. His statement therefore forms part of the investigation rather than a verified explanation for the murder.

The threat has nevertheless raised concerns because it suggests the case may not end with the arrest of the husband. Police will have to determine whether the alleged third person exists, whether there was any contact between him and Riya, and whether that relationship — if established — had any connection to the killing.

Goswami surrendered to police and was subsequently arrested. Investigators are now examining his account alongside physical evidence from the apartment, forensic findings and the post-mortem examination. Police were also reportedly looking into the couple's history of arguments and the circumstances surrounding the alleged affair.

The investigation is therefore likely to hinge on the details Goswami's version of events cannot answer by itself: what happened inside the flat, when the killing took place, what happened afterwards and whether evidence supports his stated motive.
