Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed their respective parties’ bypoll performances, with both leaders projecting the results as a vote of confidence in their political agendas.

Vijay celebrated the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) victories in Maduranthakam and Dharapuram, describing the outcome as a rejection of money power, personal attacks and what he called the erosion of political civility. Modi, meanwhile, congratulated BJP candidates who won in Assam and West Bengal, and the AINRC, an NDA ally, for its victory in Puducherry.

VIJAY: ‘VICTORY FOR POLITICAL CIVILITY’

In a post on X, Vijay said the results from the two Tamil Nadu constituencies demonstrated voters’ faith in democracy and individual dignity.

“This is an election won without spending a single paisa on votes, without confining anyone to a list and humiliating them, without any formula like the Thirumangalam or Erode East formula,” he wrote, crediting the party’s success to “love, affection, and relationships” and its commitment to safeguarding democracy.

Vijay also targeted the campaign rhetoric directed at TVK candidates Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabhama, who retained Maduranthakam and Dharapuram, respectively, after leaving the AIADMK to join his party.

“This victory is neither a personal triumph for this Vijay, nor for the Tamil Nadu Victory League alone,” he said, calling the result a victory against defamatory remarks targeting women and vulgar personal attacks.

He also took aim at critics who had mocked TVK’s two-day campaign in the constituencies, saying the voters had delivered their response through the ballot.

The two wins have taken TVK’s strength in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to 110 seats, according to the figures cited in the report, leaving the party eight short of the 118 needed for a simple majority.

MODI HAILS BJP-NDA PERFORMANCE

Modi, in a post on X, thanked voters for their continued support and said the results reflected a strong public connection with the BJP-NDA’s governance agenda.

“The Lok Sabha result of Nagaon (Assam) and Assembly results of Nandigram as well as Rejinagar (West Bengal) show yet again that the people have a deep-rooted connect with the good governance agenda of BJP-NDA,” the Prime Minister wrote.

He congratulated the victorious BJP candidates and praised party workers for their efforts. Modi also congratulated the All India NR Congress (AINRC), an NDA ally, for its victory in Thattanchavady in Puducherry.

The Prime Minister said the mandate would strengthen the alliance’s efforts to work for public welfare and fulfil people’s aspirations for a more prosperous future.

STALIN SLAMS TVK BYPOLL WIN

DMK president M K Stalin on Friday termed the TVK’s victories in the Maduranthakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections an “interim victory for betrayal”, accusing the ruling party of misusing state machinery, money power and police forces to secure the results.

In a post on X, Stalin thanked voters who backed the DMK-led secular progressive alliance and party workers who campaigned in the two constituencies. He alleged that the by-elections were necessitated by the resignation of two legislators who subsequently joined TVK, describing the development as a “blatant democratic murder”.

Taking aim at Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Stalin accused him of relying on cinematic popularity and a carefully cultivated public image, while alleging that the ruling party deployed ministers, government resources and financial inducements to win the seats.

He also alleged violations of election conduct rules, intimidation of opposition supporters and coercion of government employees. “As far as I'm concerned, betrayal has secured an interim victory. At the same time, the downfall of fake image politics has begun!” Stalin wrote, claiming that the results exposed the limits of Vijay’s political appeal.
