Amir Shokeen arrested over alleged racial slurs against Tripura youth: What happened in the viral video?

A video meant to attract attention online can quickly become a police matter when the conduct it captures is alleged to cross the line into harassment. That is what has happened in the case involving Delhi-based social media influencer Amir Shokeen, who was arrested on Thursday after a clip allegedly showing him making racial remarks against a young man from Tripura triggered widespread outrage.
The controversy has prompted complaints from political and student organisations, statements from senior leaders and action by police in two states. The central question now is what happened in the video, and what happens next in the investigation.
Why was Amir Shokeen arrested by Delhi Police?
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Niharika Bhatt, Delhi Police took suo motu cognisance after learning about the video through social media. Police registered a case at Sadar Bazar police station under Sections 192, 196, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The making of a medical and social emergency
Bhatt said several teams conducted searches across Delhi and used technical surveillance before apprehending Shokeen on Thursday evening. The sections invoked relate to offences including provocation with intent to cause a riot, promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace, and statements conducing to public mischief.
Police said they would coordinate with Tripura Police and question the accused as part of the investigation, ANI reported.
What does the viral video allegedly show?
The controversy centres on a clip circulated on social media in which Shokeen allegedly mocks a young man from Tripura over his appearance and identity, including by calling him “Chinese”. Complaints also allege that he used a derogatory distortion of Tripura’s name.
The Youth Tipra Federation, which filed a complaint in Tripura on October 21, alleged that the video showed an indigenous youth being subjected to racial harassment and humiliation. The Tripura Students Forum Delhi separately approached the police, seeking an urgent and impartial investigation.
Shokeen has reportedly apologised in a video message, describing the original clip as scripted. That explanation has not ended the controversy, and the allegations remain subject to investigation.
What have Tripura Police and political leaders said?
Tripura Police has arrived in Delhi to coordinate with its counterpart and is expected to seek transit remand so Shokeen can be taken to Tripura for further investigation. A court must decide the request before any transfer can take place.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged conduct and called for action. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also directed the state’s Director General of Police to coordinate with Delhi Police over the case.
What happens next in the racial harassment case?
Investigators will need to examine the video, establish the circumstances in which it was recorded and uploaded, and determine whether the alleged conduct amounts to the offences cited in the FIR. Police may also investigate the roles of anyone else involved in recording or circulating the clip.
The case has drawn attention to the racial stereotyping faced by people from the Northeast in other parts of India. For now, the legal process is at an early stage: Shokeen has been arrested, but the allegations have not been proven in court.
