Abhishek Porel Arrested: What Is the Case Against the Delhi Capitals Cricketer?

The IPL spotlight has suddenly shifted away from the cricket field. Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel has been arrested in West Bengal following a complaint by a woman alleging that he had a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage. Here's what we know about the case.
Why was Abhishek Porel arrested?
According to police, Porel was arrested in connection with a case registered at Mogra Police Station in Hooghly. The complaint alleges that he had a sexual relationship with the woman on the promise of marriage. The case includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, according to police. Porel has denied the allegations, calling them false.
The Age of Anger

A raging generation makes the government relent. What's next?
What had the woman alleged?
According to The Times of India, the woman, a third-year medical student, alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three years and that he had promised to marry her. She also alleged assault and criminal intimidation. The allegations were serious enough for the matter to reach the Calcutta High Court, after the complainant approached the court alleging police inaction.
Why did the Calcutta High Court order his arrest?
The court intervened in July and directed Bengal Police to trace and arrest Porel. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya also ordered police to seize Porel's electronic devices, citing concerns over the alleged presence and possible dissemination of the complainant's private photographs. Police had already seized a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination, according to The Times of India.
Where was Porel arrested?
Police arrested Porel from Emami City in Dum Dum, Kolkata, according to Hooghly Rural SP Kunwar Bhushan Singh. He was subsequently produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Chuchura, Hooghly. The court remanded him to three days of police custody, ANI reported.
What does Porel say?
Porel has consistently denied the allegations. When the complaint first emerged in June, he told media that the allegations were false and said he would respond in detail after the police investigation. PTI reported him as saying: “I will talk about this when the police investigate.” His denial is important because the allegations remain allegations unless established in court.
What happens next?
The immediate focus will be on the police investigation and the evidence gathered in the case, including electronic material ordered to be seized by the High Court. Porel's arrest does not amount to a finding of guilt. The criminal case will now proceed through the legal process. For a young cricketer who has become an important part of Delhi Capitals and Bengal cricket, the legal proceedings now sit alongside his cricketing career. For now, the court will decide what the allegations ultimately amount to.
