The filmmaker has announced that the upcoming ninth season of Koffee With Karan will be the show’s last. Season 9 will begin streaming on JioHotstar from October 14, bringing the curtain down on a celebrity chat show that has spent more than two decades turning Bollywood conversations into pop-culture moments. And Johar isn't pretending this is an easy goodbye. In the announcement video, he looks back at how the whole thing began, remembers his late father Yash Johar and admits that the show gave him far more than he could have expected.

How Koffee With Karan began with one conversation between Karan Johar and his father

Go back to June 2004. Johar had an idea: he wanted to host a talk show where he could sit down with two celebrities and have an informal, candid conversation. When he told his father, producer Yash Johar, the response was less than encouraging.

As Johar recalled in the video, his father essentially asked: you're going to call your friends and chat with them, something you already do every day, so who is going to pay you for it? Yash Johar died on June 26, 2004.

Just weeks later, on August 16, Johar shot the first episode of Koffee With Karan. More than two decades later, he is looking back at a show that became an institution in Bollywood entertainment.

In the emotional announcement, he said he had reached a point where he realised that “all good things have to come to an end”. He acknowledged that the show had attracted trolls, comments and controversy over the years, but said the affection for it remained.

That audience connection, he said, is what made the decision emotional. In a separate statement, Johar described Koffee With Karan as an extraordinary part of his life, one that gave him friendships, memories, moments of madness, love and controversy. He thanked viewers for continuing to return for another cup.

The final season of Koffee With Karan will stream on JioHotstar from October 14. The upcoming season will therefore be the show's ninth, following eight completed seasons and 161 episodes. The show originally premiered in 2004 on Star World before moving into the streaming era in 2022.

Now, Karan Johar has given viewers an answer they probably weren't expecting. There will be one more season. One more couch.
