After years of the film industry battling the after-effects of the Covid lockdown, 2026 is shaping up to be a genuinely thrilling year at the movies. From long-awaited sequels to surprising reboots, the upcoming movies in 2026 span every genre imaginable.

Here's your guide to the new movies that deserve a spot on your calendar.

Why is 2026 being called a landmark year for cinema?

According to the BBC, the industry is buzzing with optimism. The last time a Christopher Nolan epic hit the screens - Oppenheimer in 2023 - it helped deliver a massive audience boost to cinemas worldwide, alongside Barbie. With Nolan returning with The Odyssey, plus a wave of beloved franchises making comebacks, 2026 could be the year Hollywood truly gets its mojo back.

What's the deal with The Devil Wears Prada 2?

Arguably the most talked-about upcoming movie in 2026, The Devil Wears Prada 2 (releasing on May 01), reunites Meryl Streep as the fearsome Miranda Priestly and Anne Hathaway as Andy, twenty years after the original charmed millions. Reportedly, fan favourites Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are also returning as Emily and Nigel. Few plot details have been confirmed, but the excitement alone makes this one of the top movies of the year.

Is Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu worth the hype?

Absolutely. Over three series, The Mandalorian became the most successful Star Wars TV spin-off, and now it makes the leap to the big screen. This is reportedly the franchise's first cinema outing since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Sigourney Weaver joins the cast, and the film hits screens on 22 May.

Why should Pixar fans care about Toy Story 5?

Because Woody and Buzz are back - and Pixar needs this one. The 2020s have been a tough stretch for the studio by its own high standards, with several films underperforming. Toy Story 5 brings back Tom Hanks and Tim Allen and is being seen as a crucial moment for the studio's big-screen revival.

Releasing on June 19, director Andrew Stanton has teased that the plot will "hold up a mirror to our swipey modern world" - hinting at tech or tablet obsession.

What is Supergirl about and who stars in it?

Milly Alcock, who impressed audiences with her brief appearance as Supergirl in Superman, now headlines her own standalone film. Reportedly, the plot centres on an epic interstellar journey of vengeance and justice, though the trailer also promises plenty of personality and fun. Supergirl flies into cinemas on 26 June.

What can audiences expect from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey?

This is perhaps the most prestigious entry among the new movies of 2026. Nolan, known for keeping plots tightly under wraps, is adapting Homer's ancient Greek epic, with Matt Damon playing Odysseus on his long journey home after the Trojan War. The Odyssey opens on 17 July. The cast includes our favorites: Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson.

What's next for Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in what is reportedly his fourth outing as the web-slinger. Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home - where a spell caused the entire world to forget Parker's identity - this new chapter is expected to explore what it means to be a superhero utterly alone. It swings into cinemas on 31 July.

How big is Avengers: Doomsday?

Very. Robert Downey Jr. makes a stunning return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe - not as Iron Man, but as the villain Doctor Doom. Alongside a huge ensemble that reportedly includes members of the X-Men, this 18 December release is being counted on to reignite the MCU's box office dominance.

And finally, what about Dune: Part Three?

Closing out 2026 on the same date as Avengers: Doomsday, Denis Villeneuve's third Dune film is reportedly based on the novel Dune: Messiah. Releasing on Dec 18, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and newcomer Robert Pattinson (who is playing the villain Scytale) all return. Notably, Villeneuve's next project after this will be the new James Bond film - so this could be the end of a truly spectacular sci-fi trilogy.

The bottom line: is 2026 the year to go back to the movies?

If this line-up is anything to go by, the answer is a resounding yes.

Whether you're a Marvel devotee, a sci-fi obsessive, or simply a fan of great cinema, the top movies and upcoming movies in 2026 offer something for absolutely everyone. Watch out for your tickets - this is not a year to watch from the sofa.
