The Dhurandhar duology is the defining commercial event for Hindi cinema in recent years.

The first film crossed Rs 1,000 crore worldwide, and its sequel shattered 19 box office records in its opening weekend. As of 25 March, the franchise has crossed Rs 2,000 crore in combined earnings.

What Is Dhurandhar and What Inspired It?

Released on 5 December 2025, Dhurandhar draws its inspiration from two of India's most defining security crises, the 1999 Kandahar hijacking and the 2001 Parliament attack. Aditya Dhar shot over seven hours of footage and split it into two parts during post-production. The sequel released on 19 March 2026, timed across Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, and Eid al-Fitr.

How Did the First Film Perform at the Box Office?

The Dhurandhar box office journey began strongly, the film crossed Rs 1,000 crore worldwide on 26 December 2025, becoming the fourth Hindi film to reach this milestone and the highest-grossing Hindi film in domestic net collections since the COVID pandemic. Why Was the Franchise Controversial?

The film was banned across Gulf Cooperation Council countries, costing an estimated $10 million in earnings. In Tamil Nadu, it faced a Madras High Court legal challenge that briefly threatened its theatrical run. It carries a fiction disclaimer while simultaneously claiming inspiration from real events.

What Does Dhurandhar Mean for Bollywood Going Forward?

With ₹2,226 crore it is only the third Indian franchise to cross Rs 2,000 crore, after Baahubali and Pushpa. Both films individually crossed Rs 500 crore net in a single language, a first for any Indian franchise. The Dhurandhar box office performance has reset commercial expectations for Hindi-language cinema globally, and Aditya Dhar has cemented his place among Bollywood's most bankable directors. Ranveer Singh, once written off, is now its biggest star.
