EXPLAINED | Why TikTok Shop wants you to download a second app

Say a creator shows you how to get chilli oil out of a white shirt. By the end of the clip, you’ve bought the stain remover. A few weeks later, the bottle’s empty. Do you look for that video again, type the product into Shopee, or open TikTok Shop? TikTok now has an app for that third option. TikTok Shop already lets people buy from videos and livestreams in the main TikTok app. Now it has a separate shopping app.
What’s new about TikTok Shop?
Recently, TikTok reportedly released a standalone TikTok Shop app on iOS and Android in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. The Singapore App Store lists an October 28 version, and Google Play shows an October 29 update.
Is TikTok Shop itself new?
Shop has been part of the main TikTok app for years. When TikTok launched shopping in Singapore in 2022, people could already buy from livestreams and work their way from a creator’s video to a product. The standalone download gives shoppers another way into the marketplace. The rollout has come with no announcement that buying through the main TikTok app is going away.

What can you do in the new app?
You can get personalised product recommendations, watch short demos and livestreams, check out, track an order and contact support. TikTok is advertising app-only deals, shipping offers and first-order perks. These are reasons to give the app a try. Having your order and its delivery status in one place gives you a reason to open it again.
What is social commerce, exactly?
It’s shopping that starts with something you watch or someone you follow. Picture a seller livestreaming a demo of a rice cooker. You can ask whether it can make enough for four, watch the seller lift the lid and tap the product link while the stream is running. With TikTok Shop, you can complete the purchase within the platform.
Who earns when you buy from a video?
The merchant makes a sale. If the creator is promoting the product through TikTok Shop’s affiliate programme, an eligible purchase can earn them a commission. Sellers can set commission rates for products they offer through those collaborations. The basic arrangement is simple. A seller pays for a sale a creator helps make.
Why give shopping its own app?
A good video can make you want a product you hadn’t thought about five seconds earlier. A shopping app can earn a place in your routine when you already have a purchase in mind. That’s the bet the rollout suggests. A first-order voucher can get someone to download the app. A second order, after the voucher is gone, would tell TikTok more about whether it has won a regular shopper.
Why start in Southeast Asia?
TikTok hasn’t publicly explained why it picked these four markets for the standalone app. The regional shopping habit offers some context. Momentum Works estimates that purchases tied to livestreams, short videos and other content-led referrals accounted for about 37% of the value of goods sold on Southeast Asian ecommerce platforms in the first half of 2026. The figure measures the value of goods sold across platforms in the region.
Who is TikTok Shop really up against?
Start with Shopee. Momentum Works estimates it accounted for 53% of marketplace sales value in the six Southeast Asian markets it tracked in 2025. Shopee already has its own short videos, livestreams and creator incentives. TikTok Shop can be compared with Amazon and Temu as a dedicated shopping app. In these four markets, Shopee shows why having videos alone won’t set it apart.
Does the new app mean TikTok is coming back to India?
India is outside the reported rollout. The government blocked TikTok in June 2020, and the four-country launch gives Indian shoppers no new access. The more immediate connection is YouTube Shopping. Indian creators can tag products from participating retailers, including Flipkart and Myntra. Under YouTube’s affiliate programme, the retailer’s site handles checkout. The standalone TikTok Shop app advertises checkout of its own.
What would tell us the app is working?
Look for repeat orders and for shoppers TikTok wasn’t already reaching. If existing customers simply move the same purchases from one TikTok app to the other, the standalone app may look busy without bringing the marketplace much extra business. The harder thing to win is the moment someone runs out of a product and decides which app to open.
