India has launched "Operation Amistad," a major humanitarian mission aimed at supporting Venezuela in the aftermath of two devastating earthquakes that have killed hundreds and injured thousands.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced on Friday that two Indian Air Force C-17 transport aircraft had departed for Venezuela carrying emergency relief supplies, medical equipment and a specialised field hospital unit.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, "Operation Amistad underway! Two @IAF_MCC C17s took-off today for Venezuela with urgent assistance to support their post-earthquake relief efforts."

The operation represents India's latest international disaster-relief mission and comes amid a rapidly worsening humanitarian situation in the South American nation.

What Aid Is India Sending?

The relief package includes an Indian Army Field Hospital Unit capable of providing emergency medical treatment in disaster-hit regions.

India has also dispatched more than 35 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, including medicines, medical equipment and two BHISHM Cubes, which are designed to deliver rapid medical support during emergencies and natural disasters.

Why Did India Launch the Mission?

The operation follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message of solidarity with Venezuela after the disaster struck.

On Thursday, PM Modi expressed condolences to the victims and assured the Venezuelan government of India's support.

"Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes in Venezuela," he said.

"On behalf of the people of India, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones. We pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected during this difficult time. India stands ready to extend all possible assistance," he added.

Reaffirming India's humanitarian commitment, Jaishankar said, "India is committed to support the Government and people of Venezuela in this difficult time."

How Has Venezuela Responded?

India's offer of assistance has been welcomed by Venezuelan authorities.

Following Prime Minister Modi's statement, Acting President Delcy Rodriguez thanked the Indian leader for his message of condolence and his offer of support.

The exchange highlights growing international cooperation as Venezuela struggles to cope with one of the deadliest natural disasters in its recent history.

How Severe Is the Crisis?

The humanitarian emergency continues to deepen.

According to Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Alvarado, the death toll has risen to 235, while more than 4,300 people have been injured.

Many of the injured are being treated for minor wounds, but authorities say a significant number require urgent surgery and advanced medical care.

Speaking to state television, Alvarado said, "As of 7:00 PM today, we have already attended to more than 4,300 injured people, some minor, most minor, but there are also moderate and serious cases. Many of them have required surgical interventions, and unfortunately, we have received around 235 patients who arrived without vital signs or who died upon arrival at our health facilities."

The earthquakes caused widespread destruction, damaging buildings, transportation networks and essential public infrastructure across affected regions.

What Role Are Other Countries Playing?

India is not the only country participating in the international relief effort.

The United States has also mobilised military resources to support humanitarian operations in Venezuela. Acting under the direction of the US Department of State, the US Southern Command has deployed C-17 Globemaster and C-130 Hercules transport aircraft to assist with emergency airlift operations.

The mission is focused on delivering aid and supporting rescue and recovery efforts in regions hardest hit by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes.

The deployment reflects the scale of the disaster and the urgent need for international assistance.

Why Is Operation Amistad Significant?

Operation Amistad underscores India's growing role in global humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. By rapidly deploying military transport aircraft, medical teams and specialised emergency equipment, India is extending support far beyond its immediate neighbourhood.

The mission also demonstrates New Delhi's ability to provide swift humanitarian assistance during international crises while strengthening diplomatic ties with partner nations.

The Bottom Line

As Venezuela grapples with mounting casualties and widespread destruction, India has responded with one of its largest recent overseas disaster-relief efforts. Through Operation Amistad, New Delhi is providing medical expertise, emergency equipment and critical humanitarian supplies to support rescue, treatment and recovery efforts in the earthquake-stricken nation.
