South Korea is in the grip of an unlikely national obsession.

Neukgu, a two-year-old Korean wolf, burrowed under a fence at Daejeon's O-World zoo and vanished. Over a week later, he remains at large, despite the country's best efforts to bring him home.

As loudspeakers at O-World play the wolf howls Neukgu grew up hearing, the question is no longer just where he is, but what happens when they find him.

Who Is Neukgu?

Neukgu is a Korean wolf born in 2024 at O-World, a zoo and theme park in Daejeon.

He is part of a conservation programme aimed at restoring the Korean wolf, a species now considered extinct in the wild across the Korean Peninsula.

How Did the Runaway Wolf Escape?

He burrowed under a fence and disappeared into surrounding terrain.

O-World has since been shut to visitors, and a nearby elementary school was closed as a safety precaution.

Why Can't South Korea Find Him?

More than 300 firefighters, police officers, and military personnel have been deployed.

Thermal imaging cameras caught Neukgu as a heat signature near the zoo, but authorities reportedly lost track of him while replacing a drone battery.

And the price of surviving it

A subsequent sighting on a mountain 2km away led to another large-scale operation that again came up empty. The difficulty lies in the terrain, the mountains surrounding O-World are dense with spring foliage, providing perfect cover for a 35kg predator.

What Misinformation Has Complicated the Search?

An AI-generated image of a wolf on a city street circulated widely online, briefly misdirecting the search.

According to the Chosun Daily, elementary school children reportedly mistook dogs for Neukgu. One resident reportedly arrived with a wolfdog to assist, without coordinating with authorities.

Can Neukgu Actually Survive Alone?

This is the sharpest concern.

Neukgu has spent his entire life in captivity and has reportedly little to no hunting experience. Wolves in the wild primarily subsist on hoofed animals such as deer.

His last known meal was reportedly two chickens, the night before his escape.

What Are Animal Rights Groups Demanding?

The Animal Freedom Solidarity group has drawn direct parallels to Porongi, a puma shot dead by police after escaping from the same O-World in 2018.

According to the Chosun Daily, the group has called the repeated incident a consequence of poor facility management and structural failure.

Why Has the Runaway Wolf Become a Cultural Moment?

Neukgu has inspired a meme coin with a reported 24-hour trading volume of around $150,000, according to the coin's creators, who have dubbed him a "symbol of independence."

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has publicly called for a safe resolution for both Neukgu and the public.
