A horrifying case of domestic violence has shaken the United States, where a gunman went on a deadly rampage, killing eight children in Louisiana before being shot dead by police after a chase.

What exactly happened in Louisiana?

Eight children were killed in a brutal shooting spree in Shreveport, Louisiana, in what authorities believe was a case of domestic violence. The victims, aged between one and 14 years, were found across multiple locations, underscoring the scale of the tragedy.

Who was the suspect and what do we know so far?

The suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, was later shot dead by police following a vehicle chase that extended into neighbouring Bossier Parish. Authorities said he had carjacked a vehicle while attempting to flee.

Preliminary findings suggest the suspect first shot a woman before heading to another residence where the children were killed. Police confirmed that some of the victims were related to him. "Some of the children inside were his descendants," Bordelon said.

How did the crime scene unfold?

Officials described the crime scene as one of the most disturbing they had encountered. Seven bodies were found inside a home, while another child died while attempting to escape via a rooftop.

"This is an extensive scene, unlike anything most of us have ever seen," Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said.

Bordelon also described one of the locations as "incredibly gruesome" in remarks to local media.

Were there any survivors?

Two individuals were injured in the attack and are currently receiving treatment. Authorities said their conditions were not immediately clear, though at least one victim sustained life-threatening injuries.

The suspect and one of the injured women were reportedly the parents of seven of the children, further highlighting the domestic nature of the violence.

What are authorities saying about the tragedy?

Officials have called the incident one of the worst in the city’s history. "This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had," Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said.

Louisiana State Police have joined the investigation, confirming that no officers were injured during the pursuit and subsequent shooting of the suspect.

What happens next in the investigation?

Investigators are continuing to piece together the sequence of events across multiple locations. Authorities have appealed to the public for any photos, videos, or information that could aid the probe.

Meanwhile, local leaders have emphasised the need for stronger systems to address domestic violence. A comprehensive domestic violence centre is now being planned to support affected families and prevent similar tragedies.
