The 12th International Day of Yoga, observed on June 21, 2026, unfolded across more than 190 countries with mass sessions, diplomatic gatherings, and cultural celebrations. This year's theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," shaped events around the world with a focus on mobility, mental well-being, and preventive health across all age groups.
Narendra Modi led the national celebrations from the historic Red Road in Kolkata. According to the Ministry of Culture, special events were held at 100 iconic locations across India. In one of the most striking moments, the Indian Armed Forces performed yoga from the Siachen Glacier to the Rann of Kutch, marking the occasion across the country's most extreme terrains.
Hundreds gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC for a session organised by the Embassy of India. Events also took place at Dupont Circle and the World Bank, with an Ayurveda corner set up to showcase traditional wellness practices.
In Japan, reportedly more than 2,100 yoga enthusiasts joined celebrations at the historic Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple in Tokyo. In China, around 400 participants including diplomats and academics gathered at the Bund Finance Centre in Shanghai. According to the Consulate General of India in Shanghai, Consul General Pratik Mathur described yoga as India's gift to the world, as per The Hindu.

In Saudi Arabia, nearly 500 participants including government officials, diplomats, and school children attended a yoga day event in Riyadh. The session was led by Saudi women yoga instructors, marking a milestone in India-Saudi cultural ties.
Around 800 participants gathered at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto. In Nepal, more than 600 enthusiasts joined a demonstration near the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At UN Headquarters in New York, the Permanent Mission of India organised a mass session at the North Lawn.
Millions of young Indians participated in the 'Yoga 365' initiative through the MY Bharat portal, turning a single global event into a sustained wellness movement backed actively by the World Health Organisation.
