QUICK TAKE | How iPhone Crash Detection Alerts Your Family. Seven Things to Know

1. Why is Crash Detection in the news?
Divit Auluck’s iPhone reportedly alerted his mother after the Jalandhar collision that killed him and Aarav Talwar. TrueScoop reported that her number was registered for emergency alerts. After calls to Divit failed, the family contacted a friend who confirmed the accident.
2. What is the feature designed to detect?
Apple designed Crash Detection for severe passenger-car accidents, including front, side and rear impacts and rollovers. Supported devices analyse sensor information to identify a possible collision. Apple says this processing happens on the device. Raw microphone audio is neither collected nor stored for crash detection.
3. Which devices support it?
It works on iPhone 14 and later models running iOS 16 or later. Compatible watches include Apple Watch Series 8 and later, Apple Watch SE second generation, and Apple Watch Ultra models, with the required software. The feature is switched on by default.
4. What happens when someone cannot respond?
The device sounds an alarm and displays an alert. If the user remains unresponsive, it automatically attempts an emergency call after a countdown. A recorded message tells responders that a severe crash was detected and provides the device’s estimated location. Someone who can respond may dismiss the alert.

5. How does the family receive an alert?
Designated emergency contacts can receive a message reporting the crash and sharing the location. Users add these contacts through Medical ID in Apple’s Health app. Saving someone as an ordinary phone contact alone does not enrol them for emergency notifications.
6. Where can users check their settings?
On an iPhone, open Settings, then Emergency SOS, and check “Call After Severe Crash”. Review emergency contacts in the Health app’s Medical ID section. Apple also advises enabling Emergency Calls & SOS under Location Services so the device can share location with emergency contacts.
7. What are its limits?
Apple says Crash Detection cannot identify every accident. Reaching emergency services depends on available connectivity and regional support. The reported Jalandhar notification shows how a family can learn about a collision. Published accounts do not establish whether an automated emergency-services call connected in this case.
