EXPLAINED | Hey Siri, Will I Have to Pay Extra for You After Buying an iPhone?

An iPhone can come with Siri AI and still limit how much you use some of its features in a day.
Apple spelled out those limits when it began rolling out the new Siri in September 2026. On its latest earnings call, CEO John Ternus reiterated that users would be able to buy extra access. CFO Kevan Parekh explained how Apple would account for the cost of running Siri AI and for the part of a device sale that pays for bundled services. Together, their answers explain why Apple is treating AI as both a feature that can sell phones and a service it can charge people to use more often.
Will I have to pay to use the new Siri?
The purchase of a compatible iPhone gives you access to Siri AI, subject to Apple’s software and language requirements. The charge Apple has discussed is for extra access to certain features that run on servers. The call gave no launch date, price or details on how customers would buy that extra access.

Coping with an explosive Middle East
Apple says daily limits can vary by feature, the complexity of the request and how busy its systems are. Its examples include Siri AI, AI photo editing and Image Playground, which generates images. So, there’s no single number from the call that tells an iPhone buyer how many requests they can make before hitting a limit.
Why does it matter where Siri answers your question?
Some requests can run on the iPhone itself, using the chip already in your hand. Others need a server to do the work. Each time a server processes a request, Apple incurs a computing cost. Parekh told analysts it was too early to know how much Siri AI use would happen on devices and how much would go to servers.
Take a feature such as AI photo editing. Buying the phone gives you a device that can offer the feature. When an edit requires a server, Apple also has to provide computing power at the moment you use it. The daily limit and the option to buy more access give Apple a way to manage that recurring expense. How often an ordinary buyer would hit a limit is still an open question.
What did Apple’s CFO reveal about the money you’ve already paid?
From the December quarter, Siri AI will be reflected in the way Apple accounts for devices sold with services included. When Apple sells such a device, it records part of the sale as revenue over time because it will keep providing those services after the purchase. Apple already does this for bundled services such as Maps, Siri and iCloud. Parekh said Siri AI would now be part of that calculation, and that the associated cloud costs would be recorded as a cost of providing services.
That is a change in how Apple records the sale. The buyer’s checkout price is a separate matter. Apple gave no figure for how much of a device sale it would assign to Siri AI, and the future fee for extra use is a separate decision.
What can an iPhone buyer in India check today?
Start with the device and the language. Apple lists the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later, as compatible with Apple Intelligence, though some features have narrower requirements. Siri AI began rolling out in English in September, with more languages added in October. If you use Siri in a particular language, check Apple’s feature list for the new Siri AI specifically before buying or upgrading.
Apple lists its 50GB iCloud+ plan at ₹75 a month in India. That is the published price of an existing subscription. The November call did not say which Indian plan, if any, would include the extra Siri AI capacity, or whether buyers would purchase it separately.
What happens next?
Apple has given buyers the outline: access with a compatible device, daily limits for certain cloud features, and a paid option for extra use in future. The next announcement to watch is the one that tells Indian buyers how much extra use they get, what it costs in rupees and whether their existing iCloud+ plan covers it.
