Starting at Rs 44,999, the POCO X8 Pro Max marks a significant shift for POCO’s X-series lineup.

Instead of targeting only value-focused buyers, the device now enters premium territory with flagship-style specifications focused heavily on gaming, battery life, durability, and multimedia performance.

The smartphone does not attempt to be an all-round flagship competitor. Instead, it prioritizes a few core strengths and pushes them aggressively, particularly for users who value long battery life and gaming performance over camera versatility.

What Makes the Design Stand Out?

The POCO X8 Pro Max features an aluminum frame, a matte fibreglass back panel, and Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protection on the front. The matte finish also helps resist fingerprint smudges effectively.

One of the phone’s more unusual additions is the RGB LED ring system around the rear cameras, branded as “Backlight Effects.” These lights can flash for incoming calls, sync with music apps like Spotify and Apple Music, react to app notifications, and even work with games such as PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty.

However, the lighting system has limited practical use because the lights remain on the rear side of the phone and are visible mainly when the device is placed face-down.

The device is also relatively heavy at around 218 to 220 grams and measures 8.2mm thick. Despite that, its flat design and matte edges reportedly make it comfortable to grip.

Durability is another major highlight. The phone carries IP66, IP68, and IP69K certifications, allowing it to survive underwater exposure and even high-pressure water jets.

How Good Is the Display Experience?

The smartphone sports a 6.8-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a screen-to-body ratio exceeding 94 percent. It supports a 120Hz refresh rate, though it switches only between 30Hz and 120Hz rather than dynamically scaling down to 1Hz like some ultra-premium flagships.

The panel also supports 12-bit color depth and Dolby Vision, helping streaming content appear vibrant and punchy. With a claimed peak brightness of 3,500 nits, outdoor visibility remains strong.

POCO has also included 3,840Hz PWM dimming and low blue light certification aimed at reducing eye strain during extended usage.

One drawback, however, is the Always-On Display feature, which reportedly turns off completely after 10 seconds instead of remaining continuously visible.

Why Is Performance One of the Biggest Selling Points?

Performance is where the POCO X8 Pro Max appears to justify its premium pricing most convincingly.

The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s chipset, paired with up to 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. The combination delivers smooth multitasking and strong gaming performance.

According to the review, the phone can maintain a locked 60fps in Wuthering Waves at maximum graphics settings and sustain 120fps gameplay in Call of Duty: Mobile with super-resolution enabled.

To manage heat, the device uses a 3D IceLoop cooling system and a large vapor chamber. While the area near the camera bump becomes slightly warm during long gaming sessions, the phone reportedly remains comfortable to hold.

The reviewer noted one missing feature in this segment: bypass charging, which allows phones to draw power directly during gaming sessions without heating the battery.

Is the Battery the Phone’s Biggest Advantage?

Battery life is arguably the phone’s standout feature.

The POCO X8 Pro Max packs a massive 9,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, which reportedly delivers up to three days of normal-to-moderate usage on a single charge.

The phone also supports 27W reverse charging, allowing users to charge other devices using the smartphone itself.

For charging, POCO includes a 100W HyperCharge adapter capable of taking the device from 0 to 100 percent in under 90 minutes.

Wireless charging, however, is absent.

Where Does the Camera System Fall Short?

The camera setup is where the phone makes its biggest compromises.

The rear system includes a 50MP primary camera with OIS and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. There is no dedicated telephoto sensor, meaning all zoom functionality beyond 1x relies on digital cropping.

In daylight conditions, the primary camera reportedly produces crisp images with natural colors. The 2x digital crop zoom also performs surprisingly well with effective noise management and strong portrait edge detection.

Night photography remains acceptable, though not exceptional.

The ultra-wide camera has reportedly improved after software updates, but image quality still lags behind competing devices in the segment.

Video recording is another weak point. While the primary camera supports 4K recording at 60fps, stabilization reportedly suffers from visible jitters and occasional jerks, especially in low-light conditions or while using digital zoom.

Additionally, both the ultra-wide camera and the 20MP front camera are capped at 1080p video recording.

Does the Software Experience Match the Premium Hardware?

The phone runs HyperOS 3 based on Android 16. The software includes fluid animations, extensive customization features, and multiple AI-powered tools.

However, the user experience is heavily affected by pre-installed apps and bloatware.

The reviewer said users may need to spend “20-30 minutes uninstalling a massive wave of pre-installed bloatware, random games, and shopping apps.”

Despite the cluttered software experience, the connectivity package is notably future-ready. The phone supports eSIM, Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi 7, NFC, and even includes an IR blaster.

POCO has also promised four major Android OS upgrades and six years of security patches.

Who Should Buy the POCO X8 Pro Max?

The POCO X8 Pro Max is designed for users who prioritize battery life, gaming performance, durability, and display quality above everything else.

It may not appeal to professional mobile videographers, photography enthusiasts seeking optical zoom capabilities, or users who prefer clean, minimal software experiences.

But for buyers looking for a rugged phone with multi-day battery life, powerful gaming capabilities, and a premium multimedia experience under Rs 50,000, the X8 Pro Max positions itself as a compelling alternative in the segment.
