EXPLAINED | Why Are Some Folding iPhones Developing Screen Problems?

What has happened to Apple's Folding iPhone? The queues came first. The screen complaints followed.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale on October 23. Within days, some owners were reporting cracks near the inner screen’s central crease and lines running across the display.
Apple has acknowledged an issue affecting what it describes as a small number of devices and told affected customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement. It has not published a count of faulty handsets or a confirmed technical explanation.
That leaves two questions with different answers. Is there a recognised problem? Yes. Do we know how widespread it is? Not yet.

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE IPHONE DUO?
It is Apple’s entry into the book-style foldable category already occupied by rivals such as Samsung.
Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display. Open it and a 7.6-inch inner screen provides a larger surface for viewing content, playing games and using apps.
Apple’s Indian starting price is ₹2,99,900. India was among the first markets to receive the phone on October 23; another 28 countries and regions are scheduled to follow on October 30.
At that price, buyers are paying for an ambitious combination: a large screen that folds into a pocketable device. The mechanism making that possible also introduces an engineering challenge absent from a conventional iPhone.
WHY IS A FOLDING SCREEN SO DIFFICULT TO BUILD?
A conventional phone’s display stays in one position. A foldable display must repeatedly bend while remaining supported and electrically connected.
The hinge therefore does more than join two halves. It helps control the shape the screen takes as the phone closes.
In its teardown, repair specialist iFixit found that the Duo uses gears, springs and linked metal joints to manage that movement. Its model shows the screen curving inside the closed hinge, giving it room to bend more gently.
The difficulty is coordinating that movement without concentrating excessive pressure at a vulnerable point. A component beneath the screen can become important even when the damage visible above it looks much larger.
HAS ANYONE IDENTIFIED WHAT IS GOING WRONG?
There is a hypothesis, rather than a confirmed diagnosis.
Using teardown footage, patents and CT scans, iFixit examined how the hinge supports the display. In one simulation, a central support bar fails to move down far enough, allowing the folding screen to press against it.
The organisation presents that as a possible explanation for a stress point near reported damage locations. It has not established that this mechanism caused every reported failure.
The distinction matters. A plausible mechanical explanation can guide an investigation. Confirmation requires evidence from affected devices and the manufacturing process.
Apple’s public acknowledgement has not yet supplied that explanation.
DIDN’T SAMSUNG FACE A SIMILAR PROBLEM YEARS AGO?
Yes. Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold encountered screen failures in review devices in 2019, prompting a delayed release and design changes.
Samsung subsequently extended the display’s protective layer beyond the bezel to make clear that it should remain attached. It also added hinge protection caps, reinforced the display and reduced gaps between the hinge and body.
That history gives Apple’s launch a sharp competitive context. Apple is entering a category whose early difficulties were already public.
But similar-looking damage does not establish an identical cause. Samsung’s documented changes addressed particular weaknesses in its original design. Apple’s current issue still needs its own diagnosis.
DO THESE REPORTS MEAN THE ENTIRE DUO DESIGN IS FAULTY?
The available evidence cannot establish that.
Social-media posts can reveal a genuine defect, but they cannot reliably tell us its frequency. For that, we would need verified failure numbers, the number of devices in use and information about when and how the failures occurred.
Those details would help distinguish a problem concentrated in a manufacturing batch from a broader design weakness.
Images also require verification. Reporting on the Duo has identified AI-generated posts alongside genuine complaints.
Apple’s acknowledgement establishes that a real issue exists. It does not authenticate every circulating photograph or quantify the overall failure rate.
IS APPLE RECALLING THE PHONE?
Its announced response is replacement support for affected customers. That is different from asking all owners to return their devices.
According to 9to5Mac’s reporting, customers do not need an AppleCare+ subscription to receive a replacement for this recognised issue. AppleCare, the support channel, and AppleCare+, the paid coverage product, should not be confused.
Owners experiencing an inner-display problem should contact Apple through its official support channels. Apple offers iPhone service through its stores, authorised service providers and other arrangements depending on location.
An affected customer should seek instructions for their particular handset rather than assume a social-media account describes the applicable replacement process.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER FOR INDIAN BUYERS?
India is part of the launch, rather than a market waiting for the product to arrive. At nearly ₹3 lakh, the ownership experience includes more than the appeal of a larger display. Replacement availability, service access and the time spent without a working device become meaningful parts of the purchase.
For prospective buyers, the information still missing is consequential: the cause, the scale and whether replacement units address the underlying problem.
A quick replacement can resolve an individual customer’s immediate difficulty. Confidence in the product will depend on what happens after that.
WHAT SHOULD WE WATCH NEXT?
Three developments will help clarify the story: Apple’s technical explanation, evidence about the number of affected devices and whether failures continue beyond the initial launch period.
The October 30 expansion will also bring the phone to more markets, widening the test of its performance in everyday use.
Apple has demonstrated the appeal of a folding iPhone. Its next task is to show that the ambitious mechanism beneath that screen can withstand ordinary ownership.
