Canada delivered one of the most memorable performances in their football history, crushing Qatar 6-0 in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B clash in Vancouver. The emphatic victory not only marked Canada's first-ever win at a FIFA World Cup but also saw Jonathan David script history with a sensational hat-trick as the hosts underlined their credentials on the global stage.

The result also etched Canada's name into the record books. They became the first host nation to score six goals in a World Cup match since Argentina defeated Peru 6-0 during the second group stage of the 1978 tournament.

Jonathan David’s Historic Hat-Trick Powers Canada

Canada set the tone early through Cyle Larin, who opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Jonathan David then took over proceedings with a clinical display in front of goal.

The star forward doubled Canada's advantage in the 29th minute before striking again in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts complete control heading into the break. David completed his hat-trick deep into stoppage time at the end of the match, scoring in the 90+2 minute to cap a landmark evening.

With his three-goal haul, David became the first Canadian player to score a World Cup hat-trick. He also joined an exclusive club as only the second player from a nation outside Europe and South America to record a World Cup hat-trick, following USA forward Bert Patenaude, who achieved the feat against Paraguay in the inaugural tournament in 1930.

Canada's relentless attacking approach continued after halftime. Nathan Saliba added a fourth goal in the 64th minute before Qatar defender Mohammed Mani inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 75th minute. David's late strike completed the six-goal rout.

Qatar Collapse as Red Cards Compound Misery

Qatar endured a night to forget as disciplinary problems added to their struggles on the pitch.

The visitors were first reduced in numbers when Homam Al Amin was sent off during the opening half. Their situation worsened later when midfielder Assim Madibo received a straight red card following a VAR review.

Madibo was dismissed for a dangerous challenge from behind on Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné, leaving Qatar with just nine players and little chance of mounting any resistance against the rampant hosts.

Even before the dismissals, Canada had dominated possession, territory and chances, ensuring the result was rarely in doubt.

Injury Concern for Koné Overshadows Dominant Victory

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Canada's victory was tempered by concerns over Ismaël Koné, who suffered a worrying injury during the second half.

The 24-year-old required lengthy medical treatment after the challenge from Madibo and was eventually carried off on a stretcher to applause from the crowd at BC Place. Players from both sides immediately signalled for medical assistance, highlighting the seriousness of the incident.

Nathan Saliba, who replaced Koné in the 57th minute, paid tribute to his teammate after scoring by lifting Koné's shirt during his celebration.

While the injury cast a shadow over an otherwise flawless evening, Canada will take immense confidence from a historic victory that significantly boosts their hopes of progressing from Group B and continuing their impressive World Cup campaign.
