The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has confirmed that the delegation’s Chef de Mission recommended the strictest disciplinary action, including a lifetime ban. According to Moneycontrol, the matter is expected to be taken up by the relevant authorities after the Games. The allegations have not been established as a finding of guilt.

What happened to Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh in Japan?

According to reports citing a senior Indian delegation official, the alleged incident occurred on October 19 at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Nagoya, where the Indian para-swimming contingent was staying. A female housekeeping employee was reportedly working in Shaikh’s room when the alleged misconduct took place.

The complaint was brought to the attention of hotel management, the local organising committee and Indian delegation officials. Japanese police subsequently detained Shaikh and took him to a local police station. He was sent back to India on October 20, a day after the alleged incident, without competing in his scheduled events.

The Indian delegation reportedly submitted a written apology to the employee. The precise outcome of any Japanese police investigation has not been established in the reports available so far.

Will the Indian para swimmer face a lifetime ban?

The PCI has said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct. In its statement, the committee said the Chef de Mission had recommended the strictest disciplinary action, including a lifetime ban against the athlete.

However, a recommendation is not the same as a final ban. The PCI said further action would be taken by the competent authorities after the Asian Para Games, in accordance with applicable rules and procedures. The case is therefore at the disciplinary stage, with a final decision still pending.

Who is Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh, and what has he achieved?

Born in Bihar’s Madhubani district, Shaikh built a career in para swimming after a spinal tumour and subsequent surgery left him paraplegic in 2010, according to The Times of India and Outlook. He had initially pursued karate and earned a black belt before his sporting ambitions changed direction.

Swimming became part of his rehabilitation and eventually his competitive career. In 2018, he represented India at the Asian Para Games in Jakarta, winning gold medals in the 50m and 200m breaststroke events in his categories.

Why was Shaikh once ranked world No. 1?

Shaikh was previously ranked world No. 1 in the men’s 100m butterfly S5 and 50m breaststroke SB4 categories, according to World Para Swimming records. These classifications group para swimmers according to the impact of their eligible impairments on competition.

His later achievements included gold in the 200m breaststroke at the 2025 Reykjavik International Games, where he reportedly set Indian and Asian records. His selection for the 2026 Asian Para Games was another opportunity to compete internationally, but his campaign ended before he entered the pool.

The case now places his sporting future in question. The next key developments will be the outcome of the relevant disciplinary proceedings and any further official information about the allegations in Japan.
