Indian wrestling is set for a significant moment as three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat prepares to return to competition after a turbulent phase in her career. Her comeback is not just about participation, it marks a strategic reset ahead of major global events.
Vinesh Phogat is set to compete at the National Open Ranking Tournament 2026 in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, scheduled from May 10 to 12. This will be her first competitive appearance since the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Her return carries added importance because the tournament will act as a stepping stone toward qualification for the Asian Games 2026, scheduled from September 19 to October 4.
The 31-year-old wrestler had announced her retirement under dramatic circumstances at the Paris Olympics. She was disqualified ahead of the gold-medal bout after failing to make weight in the 50kg category.
That moment marked a low point in an otherwise strong campaign, where she had reached the final with a string of high-profile victories.
Despite stepping away, Vinesh returned to the sport just months later. In December, she reversed her retirement decision and shifted her focus toward a long-term goal: the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Her comeback reflects both unfinished business and a recalibrated approach to her career.
One of the most notable aspects of her return is her move to the 57kg weight class. This will be her fifth shift across categories, highlighting a career shaped by adaptability.
Vinesh has frequently moved between weight divisions due to injuries and intense domestic competition. The switch to 57kg could offer a more sustainable balance between performance and weight management.
Before the heartbreaking disqualification, Vinesh delivered one of the most impressive runs of her career at the Paris Olympics.
She defeated some of the world’s best wrestlers, including Yui Susaki, the Tokyo 2020 champion, Oksana Livach, a European Championships gold medallist, and Yusneylis Guzman, a Pan American Games winner.
These victories underscored her elite pedigree and reinforced her ability to compete at the highest level.
Vinesh began her career in the 48kg category, where she won a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2014 and a silver at the Asian Championships in 2015.
Around the time of the Rio 2016 Olympics, she experimented with multiple divisions before settling on 48kg for the Games.
In later years, she moved through 55kg and 53kg categories. Her most notable achievements came in 53kg, where she won gold at both the Asian Games 2018 and the Commonwealth Games 2018, along with two World Championship medals. She also competed in this category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda will mark her debut in the 57kg category and could define the next phase of her career.
A strong performance would not only validate her weight shift but also strengthen her case for selection in upcoming international competitions, particularly the Asian Games and beyond.
