'Tick Every Box': Gautam Gambhir Sets the Tone for India's Young Team Ahead of Sri Lanka Tests
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has laid down a simple but uncompromising message for his young Test squad ahead of the two-match series against Sri Lanka: be prepared for everything.
Addressing the team before the series, Gambhir urged the players to make the most of the days leading up to the opening Test, stressing that preparation now would determine how they respond when the real challenge begins.
Looking ahead to the opening day of the series on August 15, he said the team must be equipped with answers to every challenge, whether batting first or bowling.

"Come August 15, whether we are batting first or bowling first, we're absolutely ready with every question that's thrown at us and every answer we are ready to give. Make sure we tick all the boxes from now on," he told the squad.
The Sri Lanka series marks India's first multi-match Test assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle after last year's disappointing home series defeat to South Africa.
India bounced back by defeating Afghanistan in the one-off Test in June, but a strong start in Sri Lanka would significantly strengthen their bid for a place in next year's World Test Championship final at The Oval.
The squad blends youth with fresh opportunity.
Fast bowler Auqib Nabi earned his maiden Test call-up after an outstanding Ranji Trophy season in which he claimed 60 wickets and helped Jammu & Kashmir lift their first-ever title. Veteran all-rounder Saransh Jain, 33, also received his first Test call-up following consistent performances for Madhya Pradesh.
Welcoming the newcomers, Gambhir congratulated both players and reminded them of the responsibility that comes with wearing the India cap.
"Saransh, congratulations. You've worked extremely hard to be here. Make sure you make your family and your country proud whenever you get the opportunity," he said.
Turning to Auqib, Gambhir added, "You had a phenomenal last season and helped Jammu & Kashmir win the Ranji Trophy. That's a great achievement. Congratulations once again."
With India currently fifth in the World Test Championship standings, the Sri Lanka tour offers Gambhir's young side an early opportunity to build momentum in a campaign they hope will end with a place in the final.
