QUICK TAKE | How Do You Win a Wrestling Match on Sand? Seven Things to Know About Beach Wrestling

1. What is beach wrestling?
Two wrestlers compete barefoot in a seven-metre circle marked out on sand. They grapple standing up. A takedown can score, but the action restarts on the feet, so there’s no extended ground wrestling. A bout lasts a single three-minute period.
2. How do you score?
A wrestler can earn one point by taking an opponent down or forcing them out of the circle. A throw or takedown that exposes the opponent’s back to the sand earns three points. That means one well-executed throw can end the bout.
3. Why did the final end 2–1 if three points win?
Reaching three points ends the bout early. If neither wrestler gets there, the score at the end of three minutes decides the winner, with tie-break rules if needed. Zhao’s late point was enough to beat Taniya 2–1.
4. How did Taniya reach the final?
She won four bouts on her way to the gold-medal match at Saly Beach West, including a 4–1 quarter-final win over Estonia’s Merily Vaester and a 3–1 semi-final victory over the United States’ Matilda Ann Hruby. Zhao, her opponent in the final, won the 2025 under-17 world freestyle title at 69kg.

5. Had Taniya won medals on the mat?
Yes. Earlier in 2026 she won under-17 Asian silver and took bronze in the 69kg freestyle category at the under-17 World Championships in Baku. In Senegal, she competed on sand in the 75kg category.
6. What made Dakar a first for the sport?
Beach wrestling made its Youth Olympic debut at Dakar 2026. The competition also gave the hosts two champions. Senegal’s Elisabeth Diatta and Maguette Diop won gold in front of the home crowd.
7. Where did the silver put India on the medal tally?
Taniya’s silver was India’s seventh medal at that stage in Dakar, taking the tally to three silvers and four bronzes. India’s other silvers came from Tanvi Patri in badminton and Khushbu Rajakbhai Darjada in judo.
