Uncertainty continues to cloud the Mumbai Indians camp, where form, fitness concerns and an unsettled dressing room have combined to define a turbulent IPL 2026 campaign.

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya missed the side’s previous fixture against Lucknow Super Giants due to back spasms, with the franchise officially attributing his absence to health concerns.

The issue, however, was not initially considered serious enough to rule him out of the upcoming clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur.

Yet, as the squad departed for their next assignment, Hardik was conspicuously absent.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the all-rounder was not seen with the rest of the Mumbai Indians contingent at Terminal 1 of the Mumbai airport on Wednesday. There has been no clarity on whether he will join the squad later.

Are Mumbai Indians’ Playoff Hopes Slipping Away Despite Staying Alive?

Mumbai Indians kept their slim playoff hopes alive earlier this week, but their campaign reflects a side struggling to stay afloat. With just three wins from ten matches, the five-time champions are staring at the possibility of missing the playoffs for the fourth time in six seasons.

The mood within the camp has mirrored the results. Observations of the players and support staff point to a long and difficult season, where incremental adjustments appear insufficient.

A broader reset within the dressing room, which has reportedly lacked warmth since Hardik replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, seems increasingly necessary.

While the management had initially shown patience following the leadership transition, that approach is now under strain as the prospect of a bottom-place finish looms.

The franchise had retained its core group ahead of the 2025 mega auction under the BCCI’s revised retention policy, including Hardik, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma. However, the returns on the field have not matched expectations.

Is Hardik Pandya’s Form and Absence Worsening Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 Crisis?

Hardik’s individual performance has also been underwhelming. He has managed only 146 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 136.45 and has failed to make an impact with the ball.

His absence has therefore fuelled speculation that the situation may extend beyond a routine fitness concern.

Teammate Ryan Rickelton offered little clarity on the skipper’s condition.

"I don't know when he's expected to be back. I only found out this afternoon that he had back spasms,” he said on Monday.

So, I'm not aware of the extent of it-I wouldn't even call it an injury-or how serious it is or what he's feeling. But I'm sure he'll be back with the group as we head to Raipur this week.

Multiple reports indicate that the franchise continues to grapple with internal inconsistencies and has struggled to present a united front throughout the season, further compounding an already difficult campaign.
