Michael Hussey will help Australia prepare for the 2027 Ashes and ODI World Cup after taking on a wider coaching role under Andrew McDonald. The former Australia batter will also serve as a T20 adviser for two tournaments in 2028: the Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup, which Australia and New Zealand will co-host.

The appointment gives Hussey a more formal role across all three formats after several short spells on McDonald’s staff. His previous work with the national side was mainly as an additional batting consultant before the annual Perth Test, according to ESPNcricinfo.

England first, then the Perth Test

Hussey’s first assignment is Australia’s upcoming T20I series against England. He will then switch to red-ball cricket, helping the Test squad prepare in Perth for the series against New Zealand.

“I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” Hussey said. He said he hoped to add to what the players and coaches had already achieved as Australia entered a demanding stretch of international cricket.

Hussey turned down Fleming’s England offer

England had also approached Hussey. Stephen Fleming, his long-time colleague, wanted him to join his staff after taking charge of England’s Test team earlier this year. Hussey declined in favour of a broader consultancy with Australia, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Commentary work and coaching commitments with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and Welsh Fire in The Hundred had previously limited Hussey’s availability for Australia. McDonald said that experience across formats and competitions was one of the reasons he wanted Hussey back.

“Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players,” McDonald said. “Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, and countries invaluable, but so are his qualities as a person.”
