By the time the sun sets over the Wankhede on Sunday, Indian Premier League 2026 will have found its fourth and final playoffs qualifier.

That it has come down to this, a frantic, nerve-shredding final day involving three teams scrapping over a single berth, is both a testament to the competition's unpredictability and a reminder that in the IPL, nothing is ever settled until it is.

After nearly 70 matches played across 13 venues, the group stage concludes with a double-header on Sunday that carries the weight of an entire season for Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Of the three, Rajasthan Royals have the most straightforward path. A win against Mumbai Indians in the afternoon game at the Wankhede will take their tally to 16 points from 14 matches, guaranteeing their place in the top four.

Defeat, however, ends their campaign entirely, as would an abandoned match. If RR lose and KKR win their game later in the evening, the race for fourth place will be settled by Net Run Rate.

Can Parag and Jadeja's Return Fire Up Rajasthan Royals' Playoffs Push?

The Royals arrive at the Wankhede with a critical boost as captain Riyan Parag and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja have been passed fit for the final league game, as per ESPNCricinfo.

Parag had been sidelined by a hamstring issue that caused him to miss two matches, while Jadeja sat out their last two games with an elbow and knee problem. Their return could not be better timed.

RR's campaign threatened to unravel when they suffered three successive defeats toward the back end of the season.

A comprehensive win against Lucknow Super Giants, however, has steadied the ship and put them back in contention. They will also draw confidence from their record at this venue, having won three of their four matches against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede since 2015.

The ground's small dimensions suit the kind of aggressive cricket the Royals play, and despite having lost more than they have won in their last five outings, they will fancy their chances.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, will be playing for pride after a season that has long ceased to carry any stakes. They will be determined to sign off with a consolation victory, and on a potentially hot and humid Sunday afternoon, the physical demands on both squads will be significant.

Will Punjab Kings Seal Their IPL 2026 Playoffs Berth Without an NRR Battle?

Punjab Kings sit at 15 points after their dominant win over LSG on Saturday, a result that also officially eliminated Delhi Capitals from playoff contention.

The maximum KKR can finish on is 15 points, while DC can reach no more than 14. PBKS can seal their berth without needing to rely on NRR if Mumbai Indians beat RR and Delhi Capitals beat KKR.

Should MI beat RR and the battle come down to a 15-point tie between PBKS and KKR, the margin by which KKR win their match will become decisive.

To leapfrog Punjab Kings on NRR, KKR would need to win by at least 77 runs or, if chasing, complete the chase in 12.1 overs or fewer. If KKR hit a six once the scores are tied, they are permitted to take up to 12.4 overs. Fall short of any of these benchmarks, and Punjab Kings go through.

The evening promises to be one of the more compelling group stage finales in recent IPL memory, not for a title, but for survival.

Three franchises, two matches, and one place in the playoffs. The mathematics may be complicated, but the stakes could not be simpler.
