EXPLAINED | WPL Auction: Who Gets Picked When 146 Players Chase 27 Places?

Why could one bid change Mumbai's auction?
Mumbai Indians enter the WPL auction with ₹90 lakh available and six squad places open. G Kamalini’s starting price is ₹40 lakh.
An opening bid for her would commit nearly half their remaining purse. Another franchise could push the price higher. Mumbai would then have to decide how much money to leave for the other players they want.
That calculation captures the intrigue of the WPL 2027 auction.
In Kochi on October 28, five franchises have 27 places available and a combined ₹8.15 crore to spend. The shortlist contains 146 players.
Every purchase changes the options available for the next one.
WHY ARE SO FEW PLACES AVAILABLE?
The teams have retained much of their existing personnel.

The September retention announcement recorded 63 retained players. After the subsequent transfer of Tara Norris from UP Warriorz to Mumbai, 27 vacancies remain across the league, including seven overseas places.
This is a smaller auction in which franchises can address particular gaps around established combinations.
A team might require an Indian wicketkeeper, a reserve fast bowler or a batter capable of accelerating late in an innings. A player’s prospects depend partly on how closely her skills match those requirements.
Even a strong international record cannot create an overseas vacancy where none exists.
WHO HAS THE MOST ROOM TO BID?
UP Warriorz have the largest available purse, ₹3.75 crore, and eight open places following Norris’s departure.
Gujarat Giants have ₹1.25 crore for three places. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have ₹1.15 crore for five, while Delhi Capitals have ₹1.10 crore for five. Mumbai have ₹90 lakh for six and no overseas vacancies.
UPW, therefore, have greater financial room to pursue a contested player. They also have more vacancies to manage.
Gujarat need fewer additions. Mumbai face a tighter balancing exercise. The money available matters alongside the number and type of players each franchise wants.
WHO SET THE STANDARD LAST SEASON?
RCB arrive as defending champions after beating Delhi Capitals in the 2026 final to win their second title.
Smriti Mandhana finished as the leading run-scorer with 377 runs. In the final, her 87 from 41 balls and Georgia Voll’s 79 from 54 powered RCB’s chase.
Gujarat’s Sophie Devine won the Purple Cap with 17 wickets and was named the season’s Most Valuable Player. Delhi’s Nandni Sharma also took 17 wickets and received the Emerging Player award.
Those performances show the different contributions that can shape a campaign. A captain can dominate with the bat, an overseas all-rounder can influence several phases, and a less-established Indian player can become an important wicket-taker.
Much of that talent is already retained. The auction offers teams a chance to strengthen the combinations around it.
WHAT DID THE PREVIOUS AUCTION’S BIGGEST BUYS DELIVER?
At the auction for the 2026 season, held in 2025, Deepti Sharma commanded the highest price: ₹3.20 crore through UP Warriorz’s Right to Match option.
Mumbai bought Amelia Kerr for ₹3 crore. UPW paid ₹2.40 crore for Shikha Pandey and ₹1.90 crore for Meg Lanning. Gujarat secured Devine for ₹2 crore.
Devine provides a clear example of an expensive purchase followed by a major contribution: she went on to win the MVP award.
That does not make price a dependable performance forecast. Teams pay for anticipated contributions, availability and scarce skills. Injuries, form, playing opportunities and team combinations influence what follows.
The 2027 auction also operates within much smaller remaining budgets. Last year’s headline prices provide context, rather than a template for tonight’s bidding.
WHY COULD INDIAN WICKETKEEPERS ATTRACT INTEREST?
A wicketkeeper must fit the batting order as well as perform behind the stumps.
Cricket analysts identify Indian wicketkeepers as a category to watch, saying several teams are looking for them.
Kamalini is the prominent name at a ₹40 lakh reserve price. Taniyaa Bhatia, Uma Chetry and Sushma Verma are also available, each starting at ₹30 lakh.
Selecting an Indian keeper can give a franchise greater flexibility elsewhere in its overseas combination.
The bidding sequence could matter. Once one team fills its wicketkeeping requirement, competition for the remaining options may change. A franchise also needs alternatives if its preferred player becomes too expensive.
WHICH OTHER PLAYERS SHOULD WE WATCH?
Sophie Molineux enters at ₹50 lakh, offering left-arm spin and batting. Jess Jonassen starts at ₹40 lakh with an experienced spin-bowling all-round package. Grace Harris, at ₹30 lakh, offers power-hitting.
Their prospects depend on which teams want those roles and can accommodate an overseas player.
Among Indian options, Sneh Rana starts at ₹30 lakh. Her spin and batting could appeal to a franchise seeking additional balance. Kiran Navgire, at ₹40 lakh, offers a batting option for teams seeking boundary-hitting capacity. England’s Sophia Dunkley enters at ₹50 lakh as a top-order option.
These are players worth following. Naming them does not establish that a particular team intends to bid.
CAN A LOWER-PRICED PLAYER BECOME THE IMPORTANT PURCHASE?
A lower reserve price leaves a team more room to complete its squad.
The official list includes Gautami Naik, Vrinda Dinesh, Shweta Sehrawat, Bhavika Ahire, Parunika Sisodia and Shabnam Shakil at ₹10 lakh each.
That makes them relevant to an auction with several constrained purses. Their eventual value will depend on the contribution they make if selected.
Scouting must examine recent performances, fitness and the specific demands of a role. A domestic batter’s ability against spin or a bowler’s control in the powerplay may be particularly useful to one team.
The starting price alone cannot reveal that fit.
WHY MIGHT A GOOD PLAYER GO UNSOLD?
A franchise may already have her role covered. Its overseas allocation may be full. It may need to preserve money for another position.
With 146 players shortlisted for 27 places, many will finish without a contract even if every vacancy is filled.
An unsold result records what happened in this auction under its particular constraints. It cannot settle a player’s overall ability.
Tonight’s most revealing moments may come when a franchise stops bidding. The decision will show what it is prepared to sacrifice to secure one player, and what it still needs from the rest of its squad.
