Manchester United strengthened their hold on third place in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, condemning the hosts to a fourth consecutive league game defeat without a goal.
The decisive moment came in the 43rd minute when Bruno Fernandes shrugged off a challenge from Alejandro Garnacho on the right, reached the byline and cut the ball back towards the penalty spot.
Benjamin Sesko was engaged in a tussle with Moises Caicedo, creating space for Matheus Cunha to arrive and sidefoot the ball emphatically past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
It was a clinical finish from Cunha, who placed the ball into the top right corner, while Fernandes registered his 18th assist of the season.
Speaking after the match, Fernandes said, “Obviously it’s an amazing feeling for us.”
“We had to bounce back after two games without a win. Chelsea are a very good side. Our aim is to get in the top five and they are the closest ones, so to create some distance is perfect for us,” he said as reported by The Guardian.

Reflecting on his assist tally, two short of the record(20) assists in a single Premier League season, jointly held by Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20), Fernandes said, “Every time I want to do better than the season before. I need to improve every week and I want to end my career as the best player I could possibly have been.”
“Ayden [Heaven] was amazing again. Young kid, he transforms himself when he comes on the pitch,” he added.
“We are three points closer [to Champions League football]. That’s it. Now we have another game to win,” said Fernandes, the player of the match today.
Former Rangers striker Ally McCoist told TNT Sports, “I know Cunha got the goal, but have to give it to Bruno Fernandes, he has been absolutely outstanding. Even in a defensive sense, he has not shirked any responsibility at all.”
The result marked United’s first win at Stamford Bridge since 2020 and took them to 58 points, maintaining their position in third place.
They now hold a 10-point advantage over Chelsea, who are tied in sixth place with Bournemouth.
Aston Villa remain fourth with 55 points, while Liverpool sit fifth on 52 points.
Chelsea’s struggles continued as they failed to score for the fourth successive league match, a run only exceeded once in their history in November 1912.
Despite dominating the statistics and creating four clear chances, they were denied by poor finishing and the woodwork.
United, meanwhile, secured only their second away clean sheet of the season, showing greater efficiency in front of goal to claim all three points.
