On World Environment Day, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel at an Indian Oil Corporation fuel station in New Delhi, marking a significant step in India's efforts to diversify its energy sources and promote cleaner transportation.

The launch comes as India seeks to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower greenhouse gas emissions and support domestic biofuel production. The event also showcased a Toyota Innova flex fuel vehicle capable of running on E85 fuel.

Addressing the gathering, Puri said the launch of E85 fuel marks another step in India's efforts to diversify its energy mix and promote cleaner transportation alternatives.

What exactly is E85 fuel?

E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend that contains up to 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol. It is designed for specially engineered "flex fuel" vehicles that can operate on varying blends of ethanol and petrol.

The launch follows the introduction of E85-compatible vehicles by manufacturers including Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki, signalling the beginning of a broader transition toward flex fuel mobility in India.

Is E85 the same as E20 fuel?

No. One of the key messages from the government is that consumers should not confuse E85 with E20 fuel.

Clarifying concerns regarding the new fuel, Puri said E85 should not be confused with E20 fuel. He emphasised that existing E20 compatible vehicles would continue to remain useful and that E85 fuel would only be dispensed for vehicles specifically designed to run on it.

To prevent accidental use, fuel stations will display clear signage indicating which pumps dispense E85 fuel.

Why is the government promoting E85 fuel?

According to the government, the shift toward E85 serves several strategic goals.

Puri said the move is intended to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen India's energy security, lower dependence on imported fossil fuels, boost domestic biofuel production and create additional income opportunities for farmers supplying feedstock for ethanol production.

The initiative also aligns with India's broader strategy to address what the minister described as the energy trilemma of ensuring energy availability, affordability and sustainability.

How does E85 fit into India's ethanol blending journey?

India's ethanol programme has expanded rapidly over the past decade.

According to Puri, ethanol blending in petrol stood at only 1.53 per cent in 2014. Although India initially aimed to achieve 20 per cent ethanol blending by 2030, the target was reached nearly six years ahead of schedule.

The minister described the launch of E85 as the next stage in India's biofuel programme, building on the success of E20 fuel.

What environmental benefits does E85 offer?

One of the government's strongest arguments for E85 is its environmental impact.

Puri stated that E85 fuel has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 61 per cent compared to conventional petrol. He also noted that ethanol's higher octane rating can contribute to improved engine performance and efficiency.

The launch on World Environment Day was intended to highlight the fuel's role in supporting India's climate and sustainability goals.

How much cheaper will E85 fuel be?

The government expects E85 to offer financial benefits alongside environmental gains.

Puri announced that E85 would be priced approximately Rs 20 per litre lower than E20 fuel. He said consumers purchasing compatible two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers would benefit from lower fuel costs while also contributing to reduced emissions and lower oil imports.

Where will E85 fuel be available?

The rollout will begin in selected urban centres.

According to the minister, between 50 and 100 E85 dispensing stations are expected to become operational in cities such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Bengaluru within the coming weeks.

The government plans to expand the network to around 500 stations by the end of 2026 and approximately 5,000 stations by the end of 2027.

How has ethanol blending benefited India's economy?

The government argues that ethanol blending has already delivered significant economic gains.

Puri said ethanol blending has helped save nearly Rs 1.85 lakh crore in foreign exchange and reduced crude oil imports by approximately 32 lakh metric tonnes.

These savings have become increasingly important as India's energy demand continues to grow faster than the global average.

What does this mean for India's energy future?

The launch of E85 represents India's most ambitious push yet toward higher ethanol usage in transportation. While adoption will initially depend on the availability of flex fuel vehicles and fueling infrastructure, the government sees E85 as a key tool for reducing oil imports, supporting farmers, lowering emissions and improving fuel affordability.

As India expands the network of E85 stations and more automakers introduce compatible vehicles, the success of the programme could play a major role in shaping the country's future transportation and energy landscape.
