A major controversy has unfolded at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Nashik, where allegations of religious conversion, sexual harassment and institutional inaction have triggered protests, a police probe and internal investigation. The company has now asked employees at its Nashik office to work from home as a precautionary step.

TCS directed its Nashik staff to shift to remote work citing employee safety and convenience. The decision comes amid escalating tensions surrounding allegations at the office and public protests in the city.

Sources told news agency ANI the move was purely precautionary, aimed at ensuring safety while investigations continue.

The controversy centres on claims of “religious conversion and sexual harassment” at the TCS facility. According to police investigations accessed by news agency ANI, multiple victims have alleged harassment, coercion and pressure, with complaints reportedly not being escalated internally.

Nine cases have been registered in connection with the matter, including one at Deolali Camp police station and eight at Mumbai Naka. A total of nine complainants—including one man—have come forward with allegations ranging from harassment and torture to forced religious conversion.

What has the police investigation revealed so far?

Investigators have reportedly uncovered what they describe as “suspicious” communication records, including around 78 call logs, emails and chats exchanged between the accused. There is also evidence suggesting possible financial transactions linked to the case.

According to the police, despite being part of the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Committee, the HR manager allegedly asked victims to drop the matter and failed to take appropriate action.

As part of the investigation, Ashwini Chainani, Operations Manager at the company, has been presented before a court and remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

The allegations have sparked public outrage, particularly among women’s groups. A ‘Ranragini Jan Akrosh’ bike rally was held in Nashik, where participants raised concerns over the reported incidents.

Devayani Farande, who participated in the protests, told ANI: “Pressuring Hindu girls to hold roza and offer namaz, raping them, and converting them is against the Constitution of India. Such individuals should have their nationality revoked. They should be charged with treason and sentenced to death. Their property should be sealed, and bulldozer action should be taken over their homes..”

Her comments reflect the intensity of public sentiment, though the legal process remains ongoing.

How has TCS responded to the allegations?

Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, has ordered an internal investigation into the matter.

In an official statement, he said the allegations are “gravely concerning and anguishing.” He added the company is treating the matter with the “utmost seriousness” and has already initiated action against the accused employees.

“The Tata Group maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of coercion or misconduct by its employees,” the statement said, adding that a thorough probe is underway to establish facts and identify all individuals responsible.

The company has also stated that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies.

The case is currently under active investigation, with both police authorities and the company conducting parallel probes. The outcome will likely depend on the evidence gathered, including communication records and testimonies.
