QUICK TAKE | Who Was Sidhu Moosewala? Seven Things to Know About the Singer Rahul Gandhi Invoked in Punjab

1. Why is Moosewala back in the news?
At Congress’s “Insaaf Rally” in Sangrur on November 4, Rahul Gandhi recalled meeting the singer and invited his father on stage. Gandhi invoked Moosewala’s killing while attacking Punjab’s law-and-order situation, saying the “mindset” behind it continued to threaten talented people.
2. Who was the man behind the name?
Born Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, he came from Moosa village in Punjab’s Mansa district. His stage name identified him with that village. An electrical engineering graduate from Ludhiana’s Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, he later moved to Canada as a student.
3. How did he become a star?
Moosewala began as a songwriter, penning “License” for singer Ninja. His own 2017 hit “So High” accelerated his rise. Songs including “Legend”, “295” and “Bambiha Bole” helped establish a distinctive voice, combining Punjabi lyrics and identity with the sound and swagger of hip-hop.
4. How far did his music travel?
His audience extended across the Punjabi diaspora, particularly in Britain and Canada. His collaborations also crossed musical borders. The posthumous “Mera Na”, released in 2023, featured Nigerian star Burna Boy and British producer Steel Banglez, bringing together artists from different international music scenes.

5. When did he enter politics?
He joined Congress in December 2021 and contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly election from Mansa. AAP’s Vijay Singla defeated him. At the Sangrur rally, Gandhi recalled Moosewala’s enthusiasm when he sought to join the party and his own concerns about the dangers of politics.
6. What happened to him?
Moosewala was shot dead near Jawaharke village in Mansa on May 29, 2022, aged 28. His police security had been reduced from four personnel to two. Police said the remaining guards were not accompanying him when the attackers struck.
7. Why does his death remain politically resonant?
His killing brought together questions about organised crime, threats to public figures and security decisions. His father has continued demanding justice. Gandhi’s latest speech again placed the singer’s death within Punjab’s wider debate over safety and accountability ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.
