Tom Holland Says He 'Hated' One Cut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Here's Why It Was Changed

Somewhere inside Marvel Studios, there exists a version of Spider-Man: Brand New Day that audiences will never see.

Tom Holland hopes it stays that way. Speaking ahead of the film's release, the actor made a surprisingly candid admission about his fourth outing as Peter Parker. At one stage during post-production, the filmmakers took virtually every note from preview audiences and reshaped the movie around that feedback.

It sounded like a sensible idea. It wasn't.

"We watched it and we hated it," Holland said, recalling the moment the creative team saw the revised cut. The problem, he explained, wasn't that audiences had bad ideas. It was that the film had gradually drifted away from the story its creators wanted to tell. "It totally didn't work," Holland said. "It's what the people were asking for, but it wasn't quite what we wanted as the creatives."

It's an unusually honest glimpse into how modern blockbusters are built. Before a superhero film reaches cinemas, it often passes through multiple edits, test screenings and studio reviews. Scenes are shortened, endings are rewritten, jokes are added or removed, and entire sequences can disappear overnight. Every screening generates fresh opinions, and every opinion carries the temptation to tweak the film a little more.

Sometimes, that process makes a movie better. Sometimes, it strips away its identity. For Holland, Brand New Day became a reminder that audience feedback is valuable, but it cannot replace creative conviction. "A movie can change in a thousand different ways in the edit room," he said, adding that the team ultimately learnt important lessons from the experiment.

The film marks Holland's fourth standalone appearance as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Picking up four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it follows Peter Parker as he lives in anonymity after Doctor Strange's memory-erasing spell wiped his identity from the world's memory. As he continues protecting New York City, his powers begin to undergo what the film describes as a "strange and dangerous evolution."

Behind the scenes, Holland's involvement extended beyond acting. The actor has previously revealed that he was invited into the writers' room during the development of the film alongside screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, suggesting he played a more active role in shaping Peter Parker's next chapter than in his previous outings.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day released in India on Thursday and arrives in US theatres on July 31. Perhaps the most interesting revelation, however, isn't about Spider-Man at all. It's that even in Hollywood's biggest franchise, there are moments when the hardest creative decision is not listening to every voice in the room.
