
Veteran British actor John Nolan, known for his roles in The Dark Knight Rises and the CBS series Person of Interest, has died at the age of 87.
His death was reported on April 11, though the cause has not been disclosed.
A respected figure in British theatre, Nolan began his acting journey in London and spent two years with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
He later became part of the National Theatre ensemble under director Trevor Nunn, contributing to several notable productions.
His early stage work included performances in Julius Caesar, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and The Relapse, reflecting his strong classical training.
Nolan, who enjoyed a long and diverse career across theatre, film and television, was also the uncle of acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan.
He frequently collaborated with both nephews, appearing in several of Christopher Nolan’s films, including The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk.
He gained wider recognition on television with the BBC miniseries Daniel Deronda, where he played the titular role. In Batman Begins, Nolan portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks, a role he later reprised in The Dark Knight Rises.

And the price of surviving it
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the adaptation of George Eliot's novel was well-received and helped establish him as a leading television actor. Around the same time, he starred as scientist Geoff Hardcastle in the BBC drama Doomwatch and appeared in the ITV series Shabby Tiger.
He also gained recognition for his portrayal of the enigmatic antagonist John Greer in Person of Interest, a series created by Jonathan Nolan.
Introduced in the show's second season in 2013, his character was a former MI6 agent leading a powerful AI-driven organisation. Nolan appeared in 28 episodes through the series' fifth and final season.
Paying tribute, Christopher Nolan remembered his uncle as a major influence in his life and career. “My uncle John was the first artist I knew… I miss him terribly,” he said, highlighting their close personal and professional bond.
Born John Francis Nolan on May 22, 1938, he was the younger brother of Brendan Nolan, father to Christopher and Jonathan Nolan.
Over the decades, he built a reputation as a versatile character actor with a strong presence across genres.
His film credits included Bequest to the Nation and Terror, while his television work featured appearances in The Prisoner, The Sweeney, and Silent Witness. He also lent his voice to in-flight programming for the Discovery Channel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
