Your Car Could Soon 'Talk' to Other Cars. Here's What the Government Is Planning

Imagine driving around a blind corner. The car ahead suddenly slams on the brakes. Before you even see it, your own car flashes a warning.
That's the future India is preparing for. The government has proposed a new framework for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication, a technology that allows nearby vehicles to exchange information in real time to help prevent accidents and make roads safer.

What is Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication?
V2V technology allows nearby vehicles to communicate wirelessly by constantly exchanging real-time information such as their speed, location, direction, acceleration and braking. The communication happens automatically within milliseconds, enabling vehicles to alert one another about potential hazards.
Why is this technology important?
Many accidents happen because drivers become aware of danger only after they can see it. V2V is designed to provide warnings before that happens. It can alert drivers to sudden braking ahead, the risk of a forward collision, unsafe lane changes, wrong-way vehicles and even approaching ambulances or other emergency vehicles, giving motorists precious extra seconds to react.

Isn't this what ADAS already does?
Not exactly. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) rely primarily on cameras, radar and sensors fitted to an individual vehicle. V2V goes a step further by allowing vehicles to receive information directly from other connected vehicles, even if they are hidden behind trucks, around blind corners or beyond the range of onboard sensors. In simple terms, your car can know about a danger before it comes into view.
When will this become mandatory?
The rollout is proposed in phases. Under the draft rules, vehicles already equipped with V2V systems must comply with the new technical standard from October 1, 2027. From October 1, 2028, new vehicles in the specified categories would be required to come fitted with compliant V2V communication systems. The proposal is currently open for public feedback before the final rules are notified.
How will the technology work?
Vehicles will exchange encrypted wireless signals using the 5.9 GHz frequency band, which has already been earmarked by the Department of Telecommunications for intelligent transport systems. The communication happens automatically without requiring mobile networks or any action from the driver.
Is the system secure?
The proposed AIS-230 standard includes cybersecurity as a mandatory requirement. Manufacturers will have to meet technical standards covering secure communication, positioning accuracy, electromagnetic compatibility and overall system reliability before vehicles receive certification.
Why is the government introducing this now?
India records one of the world's highest numbers of road accidents every year. The government believes connected vehicle technology can improve drivers' situational awareness, complement existing safety systems and reduce crashes caused by delayed human reactions. It is also expected to lay the foundation for connected mobility, smarter transport networks and eventually more advanced autonomous driving technologies.
