Google Gemini Gives boAt Earbuds a Brain. Can boAt Own the AI Experience?

The earbud has acquired a brain.
It can answer questions, translate conversations, control music, remember tasks and rummage through a user’s Google Calendar. This is considerably more responsibility than wireless audio devices were originally hired to handle.
Indian consumer electronics company boAt has partnered with Google Cloud to bring Gemini-powered features to Crest AI, its forthcoming range of smart audio devices. The collaboration promises to turn earphones from passive accessories into conversational companions capable of responding to natural speech and performing tasks across Google’s services.
It could become boAt’s most important attempt to graduate from selling affordable hardware to designing intelligent experiences.
It could also leave the company confronting an awkward question. When Google supplies the model, cloud infrastructure, productivity ecosystem and much of the intelligence, what exactly does boAt own?
The answer will determine whether Crest AI gives boAt a defensible new business or merely makes it an attractive delivery vehicle for Google Gemini.

Gemini Enters the Ear
The proposed capabilities are ambitious.
Crest AI devices will use Gemini Live and Google Cloud’s enterprise agent infrastructure to interpret complex questions, understand context and respond conversationally. The companies say the products will support India’s linguistic diversity and regional nuances, an essential requirement for any voice technology seeking mass adoption in the country.
Crest Translate will provide two-way translation. Crest Ask will allow users to learn, ideate, ask general questions or simply chat through their audio device. Integration with Google Workspace will let them operate Gmail, Google Tasks and Google Calendar through voice commands.
Gaurav Nayyar, chief executive of boAt, reportedly described the partnership as a move beyond conventional voice assistants towards intelligent conversational agents capable of handling music, productivity, translation and general queries.
Google Cloud India Managing Director Sashi Sreedharan, meanwhile, has called voice and vernacular the next frontier of artificial intelligence in India. The company believes its cloud infrastructure can help boAt scale the experience to millions of users.
On paper, the proposition is compelling. Smartphones demand hands and eyes. Audio devices are already worn for hours, sit close to the body and have permission to listen whenever activated. That makes the ear a valuable new gateway into the AI economy.
The companies are no longer competing merely to sell better earphones. They are competing to decide which intelligence accompanies a user through the day.
Why boAt Needs More Than Better Bass
boAt built one of India’s most recognisable consumer brands by understanding that earphones did not need to be sold like sober electronic equipment.
It wrapped affordable hardware in colour, celebrity, cricket, youth culture and swagger. The brand made audio accessories fashionable without pricing them beyond the reach of the mass market.
That formula delivered scale. IDC data showed boAt leading India’s true-wireless-stereo category with a 31.9 per cent share during the first half of 2025. It has also maintained leadership across several quarters of India’s crowded earwear market.
Scale, however, does not eliminate commoditisation.
Affordable audio has become a brutal feature race. Brands can rapidly reproduce familiar combinations of battery life, noise cancellation, touch controls, gaming modes and aggressive pricing. Consumers encounter shelves crowded with products that look similar, promise similar specifications and are frequently assembled from overlapping supply ecosystems.
The market is also maturing. Counterpoint Research found that Indian TWS shipments declined two per cent in the first quarter of 2026, even as revenue rose seven per cent. First-time urban buyers were becoming harder to find, pushing brands towards replacement purchases, premiumisation and more meaningful feature upgrades.
Artificial intelligence offers boAt a possible escape. If earphones become useful assistants rather than replaceable accessories, consumers may retain them longer, pay more for them and enter a continuing software relationship with the brand. Crest AI is, therefore, larger than a feature launch. It is an attempt to move boAt upwards in the value chain.
The Fear of Being Left Behind
Faisal Kawoosa, chief analyst at technology research and consulting firm Techarc, says AI is rapidly becoming the default interface between a device and its user. Consumer electronics companies, eager to introduce AI across their portfolios, often prefer integrating technology that is already available to attempting to build it from scratch.
boAt is following that path, but it is not entering an empty category.
Other audio brands have already integrated AI features into earbuds. Indian electronics company Mivi was among the early domestic players to introduce AI capabilities in the category. Kawoosa believes this places boAt’s move partly within a broader industry race to introduce fashionable features quickly and avoid appearing technologically behind. “This also helps them counter the narrative of lack of innovation or being left behind, a sort of brand-level FOMO,” he says.
That perception becomes particularly important as a company moves towards the public markets. Investors do not evaluate consumer brands only on revenue, margins and distribution. They also search for evidence that a company can anticipate technological shifts rather than merely respond to them.
Innovation, or at least the credible appearance of it, becomes part of the valuation story.
AI integration may not immediately transform the everyday usefulness of an earbud, Kawoosa cautions, but it can still influence how the company is perceived by customers, competitors and potential investors.
For boAt, Crest AI, therefore, serves two purposes. It upgrades the product and updates the corporate narrative.
Google Owns the Brain
The partnership also reveals how much of the intelligence chain already belongs to Google.
Gemini supplies the conversational intelligence. Gemini Live manages real-time interaction. Google Cloud provides the infrastructure. Gmail, Calendar and Tasks provide some of the most useful applications. A customer seeking hands-free productivity will need to enter Google’s account and permission ecosystem.
boAt supplies the physical doorway: microphones, speakers, industrial design, acoustic engineering, battery, firmware, pricing, retail reach and an established relationship with Indian consumers.
This division is not inherently weak. Most successful hardware companies depend upon technologies they do not own. Smartphone brands buy processors, license operating systems and rent cloud infrastructure. Their ability to integrate those components into a distinctive product can still create enormous value.
The strategic problem appears when an important supplier also owns the intelligence, services and customer ecosystem.
Google does not merely manufacture one component inside Crest AI. It operates the layer with which the user will converse. It may understand the request, retrieve information, execute the task and connect the interaction to other Google products. boAt may own the object in the ear. Google could own much of what happens through it.
Kawoosa describes the present power equation more bluntly. “Here, boAt is becoming a mere carrier while everything else is from Google,” he says.
Renting Intelligence Is Not the Same as Renting Advantage
The easy criticism is that boAt has placed its name on hardware while outsourcing the clever part to Google. That is also too simplistic.
Developing a frontier AI model would be financially irrational for an audio company. The computing costs, research talent, training data and continuous development required would overwhelm the economics of consumer earphones.
The relevant question is whether boAt can construct proprietary value above and around Gemini.
That value could come from microphone quality in noisy Indian environments, low-latency interaction, battery optimisation, reliable connectivity, distinctive controls and a deeper understanding of regional speech. It could come from the way Crest AI decides when to listen, how quickly it responds and how smoothly it shifts among music, translation, communication and productivity.
Distribution is another asset. boAt already reaches consumers through online marketplaces, retail stores and a powerful youth brand. Google can supply intelligence, but boAt may supply a mass-market route into Indian ears.
This is where the partnership could become more than technological decoration. If boAt combines Gemini with superior product design, local adaptation and an experience consumers associate with Crest AI, rented intelligence can still produce owned advantage.
The danger is assuming that the presence of Gemini itself creates that advantage.
Can Every Rival Hire the Same Brain?
Google Cloud is in the business of distributing its models and infrastructure. Its commercial interest lies in placing Gemini across as many devices, companies and customer interactions as possible.
Unless boAt has secured meaningful exclusivity or developed proprietary layers that rivals cannot reproduce, another audio company could conceivably buy access to similar intelligence.
The hardware industry has seen this pattern before. A differentiating feature appears, suppliers make it widely available and the market rapidly converts innovation into a checkbox.
“AI-powered” then joins battery life and noise cancellation on the side of the box.
Crest AI will need to demonstrate why Gemini behaves better inside a boAt device than it would inside a rival product. Indian dialect support may help, but the announcement does not disclose how much of that localisation is exclusive to boAt, what proprietary technology Crest AI contributes or whether competitors can access comparable capabilities.
Those details separate a product platform from a marketing label.
Can a Tech Brand Become a Tech Company?
The larger challenge extends beyond boAt.
Indian consumer electronics brands have become formidable at understanding local buyers, moving products through online and offline channels, managing price points and building identities that compete with global names. Their control over the underlying technology and value chain, however, frequently remains limited.
AI could deepen that dependency. If the model, cloud, operating layer, processors and services all belong to outside suppliers, the domestic company controls the brand and distribution while much of the durable technological value accumulates elsewhere.
Kawoosa argues that Indian brands such as boAt will eventually have to develop fundamental capabilities that give them greater control over the value chain.
“This has to change if Indian brands across product categories have to evolve as tech companies rather than remain tech brands,” he says.
That distinction goes to the heart of boAt’s next phase.
A tech brand can market technology brilliantly. A tech company must own enough of the product’s intelligence, intellectual property or user experience to shape what comes next.
boAt does not need to build its own frontier model to cross that distance. It does need to demonstrate that Crest AI contains something more defensible than access to Google Gemini.
Who Owns the Listener?
The most consequential question concerns the customer relationship.
If a user asks an earbud to read an email, add a calendar appointment or identify an unfinished task, several layers become involved: the device, the boAt software, Google’s model, Google Cloud and the user’s Workspace account.
The partnership announcement describes the convenience but does not explain the entire data architecture. It does not specify which company receives conversational information, how permissions will be managed, what interaction data boAt can retain or how responsibilities will be divided when something goes wrong.
Google says Workspace content used by Gemini remains under the user’s control and is not used to train or improve its generative AI models. Its published privacy commitments also state that prompts and generated outputs inside Workspace applications are not stored without permission.
Crest AI will still need an equally intelligible explanation at the device level.
Voice interactions feel more intimate than typed searches. Earphones travel through meetings, commutes and private conversations. Users must know when the system is listening, which service is processing a request and how to disconnect individual applications.
The brand that controls those permissions may also control the most valuable relationship in the partnership.
If the experience begins with “Hey Gemini”, boAt risks disappearing inside its own product. If consumers understand Crest AI as a distinctive boAt service, the company preserves a stronger claim over the listener.
From Celebrity Swagger to Software Substance
The timing of the partnership matters.
boAt reported revenue of ₹2,931 crore in FY26 and a 38 per cent rise in profit after tax to ₹84.5 crore. Its wearables business returned to profitability, overseas revenue more than doubled and it ended the year with approximately ₹397 crore in cash and no bank debt, according to media reports.
Revenue, however, remained broadly flat. Improving profitability through discipline is valuable; discovering a new growth engine is harder.
Crest AI gives boAt a story larger than another product refresh. It places the company inside ambient computing, where devices recede and intelligent assistance follows users through voice.
It also gives boAt an innovation narrative as it prepares for the scrutiny of the public markets. That narrative will become much stronger if the company can show that it owns a meaningful part of the technology, experience and customer relationship beneath the AI label.
For years, celebrities supplied the voice of boAt. Google will now supply the voice inside it. Whether boAt can still own the conversation is the real test.
