Why Airbnb is adding hotels to an app built for homes

A traveller can want a villa in Goa for a family holiday and a hotel room for a one-night stop in Singapore. Airbnb wants to sell both. In its November 5, 2026 results, the San Francisco company said it now offers thousands of boutique and independent hotels across more than 60 destinations. Hotels still account for less than one in ten nights booked on Airbnb.
Co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky explained the logic on the earnings call. He reckons a guest who can’t find the right place on Airbnb probably opens another app and books a hotel. “We just have to get the people in our store to buy something before they leave,” he said.

What exactly has Airbnb added?
More hotel rooms that travellers can find and book through the Airbnb app. Its May 20 product announcement put the featured hotel push in 20 destinations, including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome and Singapore. Its November update puts the wider boutique and independent hotel offering at more than 60 destinations. On a featured hotel’s page, guests can choose among available room types, each with its own photos, description and price.
Hasn’t Airbnb sold hotels before?
Yes. Airbnb invited boutique hotels and bed-and-breakfasts onto its platform in 2018. In April 2019, it bought HotelTonight, a separate booking service built around last-minute hotel stays. The difference now is where Airbnb is putting the rooms. It’s expanding the selection on its main app, where somebody who came looking for a flat can choose a hotel without starting the search over.
Why does Airbnb want the one-night stay?
It’s an extra booking from someone who may already use the app. A family on a week-long trip might want a kitchen and enough bedrooms for everyone. The same customer travelling alone for work may prefer a hotel that can check them in late. Chesky singled out last-minute, one-night business travel. CFO Ellie Mertz said Airbnb is seeing demand from both existing guests and people making their first booking.
How does a hotel booking help Airbnb sell homes?
Airbnb says about 35% of guests whose first booking on the platform was a hotel went on to book a home within a year. The company tracked guests who booked the hotel between October 2024 and September 2025. That tells Airbnb some hotel customers will also buy what it is best known for. It leaves open how many would have booked a home on Airbnb anyway.
Did that figure fall from 55% to 35%?
Airbnb was counting different groups. Its May results put the figure at about 55% for guests who booked a hotel in 2024 and then booked a home within a year. That group could include people who already used Airbnb. The November figure is for guests who started with a hotel, from a different booking window. The two percentages give us no like-for-like measure of whether guests are coming back less often.
Why give hotel guests credit for another trip?
The credit gives them a reason to open Airbnb again. At the May launch, the company advertised up to 15% back on eligible hotel stays. Its help page says guests get the credit after completing the stay. It goes into their Airbnb account and can be used on eligible future bookings. On a hypothetical ₹10,000 eligible room charge before fees and taxes, 15% would put ₹1,500 towards a later purchase. You still pay for the room today.
Will Airbnb match the price on another app?
Sometimes. The hotel booking has to show the price-match offer at checkout. If you find a qualifying lower public price, Airbnb says you must claim within 24 hours. The comparison has to cover the same property, dates, room type and number of guests. A lower price with stricter cancellation terms won’t qualify. Airbnb gives an approved difference in credit, up to $400 or its equivalent.
Why start with independents and boutique hotels?
A small hotel with a distinctive design gives Airbnb something that feels closer to the stays people already browse there. The hotel, in turn, gets another way to fill rooms. Airbnb says its system can link to the software hotels already use to update prices and availability across websites, and charges a fee per booking. That makes it easier to add rooms, including ones a traveller may find on another app. Then price, cancellation terms and service can decide where they book.
Do tighter rules on holiday rentals explain the move?
They help explain why hotels are particularly useful in some cities. New York City bars booking platforms from processing unregistered short-term rentals, with exemptions including buildings approved for legal short-term occupancy. Airbnb said in May that its hotel pilot showed encouraging results in cities where demand or regulation limited the supply of stays. Its pitch also covers trips where a traveller would choose a hotel even if plenty of homes were available.
Does this put Airbnb up against Booking.com?
More directly. In the September quarter, Booking.com said homes, apartments and other alternative accommodation accounted for about 37% of its room nights. The companies are moving into each other’s territory. Airbnb has even put Pepijn Rijvers, who helped build Booking.com’s homes business, in charge of both its homes and its hotels. The sharper contest is over where people start looking when they could book either type of stay.
Why does Airbnb want to be your AI travel agent?
Airbnb wants you to start planning on its app, before you’ve even decided between a hotel and a home. In its November 5 shareholder letter, the company said it plans to start rolling out an AI travel agent in the first half of 2027. Ask it where to stay and Airbnb says it could pull together maps, photos and side-by-side comparisons. The company also says the tool will help with tasks such as changing a reservation or getting help with a refund.
The hotel push gives Airbnb more places to show you. The AI agent gives it a shot at keeping you in the app from the first search to the booking. Airbnb describes planning an entire trip across homes, hotels and activities as a longer-term goal. It hasn’t announced when travellers in India will get the tool.
Can I book an Airbnb hotel in India already?
Airbnb already lists hotel rooms around Delhi and Mumbai. Its Delhi page includes rooms near the airport, while its Mumbai page includes a room in a professionally managed boutique hotel in Andheri East. Airbnb has yet to say how widely it plans to expand its featured hotel selection in India. Chesky said nights booked by guests in its India market grew more than 60% in the September quarter, across types of stays.
Who already sells these rooms to Indian travellers?
MakeMyTrip is one big rival. It reported 11.7 million room nights for hotels booked separately from holiday packages in the September quarter, up about 19% across its business. One room booked for three nights counts as three room nights. Airbnb hasn’t published a comparable India hotel figure. The overlap is clearest when the same room appears on several sites and the traveller can compare what each one charges.
What if I need to change my hotel booking?
Read the cancellation terms for that room. Airbnb says guests within the free cancellation window can cancel and rebook if the hotel has availability. After that window closes, Airbnb can ask the hotel for a refund on your behalf, or you can contact the hotel. For these requests, the hotel decides whether to approve a refund. A hotel and a home can sit in the same search results and still come with different terms.
Will people open Airbnb when they already want a hotel?
That’s the harder test. Chesky said he sees the potential for billions of dollars in hotel revenue over time, without giving a timeline. Airbnb’s November results don’t say how profitable hotels are on their own. The next useful numbers are how many bookings hotels bring that would otherwise have gone elsewhere, and how often those guests come back once they’ve spent the credit.
