Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are expected to hold a crucial bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on June 17, with discussions likely to focus on the West Asia crisis, energy security, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, and the proposed India-US trade agreement, according to sources.
The anticipated meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia and growing concerns over the impact of instability in the Strait of Hormuz on global energy supplies and maritime trade.
Sources said both India and the United States are keen to build a long-term energy partnership, with talks expected to centre on strengthening cooperation in the energy sector amid fears of disruptions to global supply chains caused by regional tensions.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important shipping corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil and gas supplies. Ongoing instability in the region has raised concerns among major economies over energy security and trade flows.
Trade is also expected to feature prominently in the Modi-Trump discussions. Sources indicated that the proposed India-US trade agreement is in its final stages, with negotiations progressing steadily and work on the pact likely to be completed in the coming weeks.
The two countries had reached an interim trade agreement in February following nearly a year of negotiations. The White House has also confirmed that advancing the proposed bilateral trade agreement will be a key focus of the meeting.

The Unravelling of an Alliance
Earlier, while addressing the Outreach Session on "Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity" at the 52nd G7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the economic and humanitarian impact of recent tensions in West Asia.
"We welcome the progress made in peace efforts in West Asia. This conflict has caused loss of life and property in our friendly countries in the region. Disruptions to maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz have affected the global economy. Several Indian civilians have also lost their lives," the Prime Minister said.
He stressed that sustainable solutions to global conflicts require diplomacy and cooperation.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of protecting seafarers involved in international trade.
"Ensuring the safety of seafarers, who connect nations through global maritime trade, is our collective responsibility. We must ensure that sea routes remain secure and that seafarers can carry out their duties without fear," he said.
His remarks followed a recent maritime incident in the Gulf of Oman in which three Indian nationals were killed after a Palau-flagged oil tanker carrying a multinational crew was struck by US forces over an alleged violation of a blockade while reportedly transporting Iranian oil.
Reaffirming India's commitment to global maritime security, Modi said the country is prepared to work with international partners to safeguard key sea routes and address emerging international challenges.
India is participating in the G7 Summit as a partner nation, marking its 13th appearance in the outreach process.
