QUICK TAKE | Diwali Comes to San Francisco City Hall for the First Time. Seven Things to Know

1. What happened at San Francisco City Hall?
City Hall held its first Diwali celebration. The gathering brought city officials, Indian diplomats and community leaders together to mark the Festival of Lights and recognise what Indian Americans have contributed to San Francisco.
2. Who put the celebration together?
Indiaspora organised the event in association with SHOR Media. Its founder, M.R. Rangaswami, opened the evening by speaking about Diwali’s themes, including the triumph of light over darkness. Mayor Daniel Lurie and India’s consul general in San Francisco, Satish Sivan, joined the gathering.
3. What did Diwali look like inside City Hall?
The programme included a ceremonial lamp-lighting and traditional dance performances. Indian and American flags flanked the podium, and guests gathered on City Hall’s grand staircase for group photographs. India’s consulate shared images from the evening on social media.
4. What did the city mark with this first?
Lurie used the occasion to honour the city’s Indian and South Asian communities. India’s consulate highlighted the contributions of Indian Americans to San Francisco and the cultural ties between India and the United States. The first was specific to the venue, San Francisco City Hall.

5. What does lighting the lamp signify?
The lamp is one of Diwali’s most recognisable symbols. Rangaswami spoke of light overcoming darkness and knowledge overcoming ignorance. At City Hall, lighting the lamp gave guests a way to take part in the tradition they had come to celebrate.
6. Why does Diwali fall on November 8 this year?
The main day, when many families perform Lakshmi Puja, follows Amavasya, the new moon in the Hindu lunar month of Kartik. Its date shifts on the Gregorian calendar each year. In 2026, Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday, November 8.
7. When do the other Diwali observances fall?
Dhanteras fell on November 6, two days after the City Hall event. The New Delhi calendar lists Govardhan Puja on November 10 and Bhai Dooj, which celebrates the bond between siblings, on November 11.
