Any protest loses its legitimacy when it becomes farcical and distasteful. Australian politician Pauline Hanson, 71, leader of the antiimmigration One Nation, crossed the line by a wide mark when she wore a full-length burqa to the Senate. She was protesting her fellow parliamentarians’ refusal to even discuss a bill to ban burqas in public places.
Hanson remains unfazed but the stunt put paid to any case that might have been made out that the issue merited a debate. Hanson is now banned from entering the chamber for the rest of the year.
