INS Sahyadri's participation forms part of India's broader engagement with regional maritime partners through multilateral naval exercises. The deployment also provides an opportunity for participating forces to exchange operational expertise and strengthen coordination at sea.
HARBOUR AND SEA PHASES TO TEST INTEROPERABILITY
Malabar 2026 is structured around multiple phases, comprising harbour-based engagements and exercises at sea.
The harbour phase will feature professional interactions and collaborative operational planning among the participating naval contingents. These engagements are intended to facilitate the exchange of expertise and establish coordination before the vessels move into the operational phase.
During the sea phase, INS Sahyadri will operate alongside naval assets from Japan, the United States and Australia. The exercises will focus on improving joint maritime operations, strengthening mutual trust and enhancing the ability of the four navies to operate together.
The multilateral drills are expected to contribute to maritime stability and security across the wider Indo-Pacific region.
QUAD MARITIME COOPERATION AND INDIA'S MAHASAGAR VISION
The participation of the four navies reflects the growing importance of maritime cooperation among Quad countries, which comprise India, the United States, Japan and Australia.
For India, Malabar 2026 also reinforces its commitment to building stronger maritime partnerships with like-minded countries in the region.
The exercise aligns with India's MAHASAGAR vision, which stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. The initiative emphasises regional cooperation, shared maritime security and collective efforts towards stability and growth.
Through its participation, the Indian Navy seeks to deepen operational partnerships and strengthen its engagement with regional forces in safeguarding the Indo-Pacific.
