At least 13 people, including 12 Indian nationals, were killed in an explosion and subsequent fire at Qatar's Barzan gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, according to Qatari authorities and the Embassy of India in Doha. Sixty-six others were injured, though officials said none of the injuries are life-threatening.

Indian Embassy Confirms Deaths, Assures Assistance

The Embassy of India in Doha on Monday confirmed the deaths of 12 Indian nationals in the incident and expressed condolences to the affected families.

"Qatari authorities have confirmed that 12 Indian nationals have unfortunately passed away in the Ras Laffan incident yesterday night. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls," the Embassy said in a post on X.

The Embassy also provided an update on those injured in the accident.

"Qatari authorities have also confirmed that all those who got injured in the incident are in stable condition and are receiving appropriate medical treatment."

It added that officials are working closely with Qatari authorities to provide all possible assistance to affected families, including facilitating the early repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased.

QatarEnergy Says Incident Was Operational Accident

In an updated statement, QatarEnergy confirmed that 13 people lost their lives and 66 others are currently receiving medical treatment following the explosion and fire.

Expressing condolences to those affected, the company stated: "QatarEnergy extends its heartfelt condolences to the families. friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives, and prays for the swift recovery of those injured. Qatar Energy pledges its full support to those affected by this tragedy."

The company said the deceased were Indian and Pakistani nationals, while those injured included citizens of Qatar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria and Nepal.

"The lives lost in this incident are of Indian and Pakistani nationalities, and those injured are of Qatari, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, Nigerian, and Nepalese nationalities."

QatarEnergy stressed that the explosion was an operational accident and not linked to any hostile act.

The company noted that production at the Barzan gas facility had remained suspended since December 2025 for urgent maintenance work and had resumed operations only two days before the incident. Emergency response teams, supported by Qatar's Civil Defence, successfully contained and extinguished the fire.

QatarEnergy further said that assessments of damage to the facility and nearby infrastructure are underway, while the country's LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port and export operations remain unaffected.

"QatarEnergy's LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port, other logistics operations, and QatarEnergy's export capabilities remain unaffected as a result of this explosion and fire."

Technical Malfunction Suspected; Investigation Underway

Qatar's Ministry of Interior said preliminary investigations indicate the incident was triggered by a technical malfunction during operations at the facility.

According to the ministry, security agencies and emergency response teams immediately launched rescue and evacuation procedures in line with approved emergency protocols. All injured individuals were transported for treatment, while search and rescue operations at the site have been completed.

Authorities are continuing investigations to establish the precise technical cause of the accident and determine further legal and technical measures.

The ministry also sought to reassure residents and workers that there was no environmental or public safety threat arising from the incident.

"The Ministry of Interior, in coordination with the competent authorities, confirms that no leak resulting from the incident has been detected that would pose a threat to the safety of individuals or the surrounding environment."

The ministry extended condolences to the families of those who died and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, while a full investigation into the explosion remains ongoing.
