The Indianisation of Anthropic
Anthropic’s AI model Claude is so good that every update sends entire sectors into a tizzy because of how it can take on roles that earlier required humans. The company focuses mainly on enterprises or businesses, but many Indian sectors couldn’t effectively use its services because the data wasn’t being crunched in India. It is changing that. By using the services of Amazon’s Bedrock platform and its domestic servers, Anthropic will soon run inference, the process by which AI responds to queries or carries out tasks, within India itself. Its press release stated that highly regulated areas like banking, insurance and government agencies can therefore use Claude.
It was only in February that the company opened its Indian office in Bengaluru. Since then it has begun to scale up its presence. Anthropic’s Managing Director for India, Irina Ghose, said in the release, “Adding in-country inference marks a significant step forward in what we are building here—a growing local team, strong performance in Indian languages, and partnerships that put this technology to work for India.” Anthropic has also started projects for AI skill development and scientific research using Claude. Several major AI companies are similarly vying for a slice of the Indian market by processing data within India.
