Smart Policing: Haryana joins states using AI to tackle cybercrime
Haryana Police have become the latest to join the bandwagon of state police forces using Artificial Intelligence (AI). On August 31, they announced setting up an AI Task Force headed by an Indian Police Service level officer. One of their main focus would be on cybercrime as it involves vast and complex data like transactions, phone records, tracking of online usage, etc.
A press release said, “Analysing every record and transaction manually can be time-consuming and challenging for investigating officers. Keeping this challenge in view, the Haryana Police team is also working on AI-assisted Financial Trail Analysis.” This would help investigators “identify relationships among suspicious financial transactions, analyse transaction patterns, understand the possible flow of funds and quickly bring important linkages to the attention of investigating officers”.

Besides cybercrime, AI is also being incorporated into citizen grievance redressal and court returns. Other states have also brought AI into the fold of their police. Maharashtra has set up an organisation called Maharashtra Advanced Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement to build AI policing tools. Kerala has a body called Cyberdome that uses AI against cyber crimes. The Delhi Police are using AI for facial recognition of CCTV footage.
