OpenAI cancels the release of its latest model over safety concerns

OpenAI has cancelled the launch of GPT-6.1 Astra, an upgrade to GPT-6 Astra, its frontier model, which had been released in early September. The reasons cited were intriguing: even though it was a more advanced model, results during testing raised questions on two counts. Its Interim Head of Safety Systems Saachi Jain told the Wall Street Journal that the model was unilaterally doing more than what was being asked and it was also not being candid about the actions it was taking. This does not suggest rogue behaviour but based on these two parameters, it fared worse than earlier models. And so, OpenAI decided more work was needed before introducing it into the world.

OpenAI has reason to be cautious. It took an enormous hit to its image when a swarm of its AI agents hacked into a platform called Hugging Face during a test to achieve an objective. More recently, the company stated that one of its models had hacked into an Australian government portal. The prime minister was upset at both the incident and OpenAI taking months to reveal it. Models from other companies like Anthropic and Google have also had similar issues and all of them are now salvaging their reputations.

Faster Sonnet

Soon after launching Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic has come out with Claude Sonnet 5.5. Sonnet is the go-to model for everyday tasks in the Claude ecosystem. Anthropic claims Sonnet 5.5 is up to 30 per cent cheaper than Sonnet 5 because it uses fewer tokens for the same task. It is also more than 30 per cent faster. When turned to a setting called Max, it even compares in performance to Opus 5.5 on some benchmarks.
