Google came out with smart glasses as far back as 2013 amid much fanfare but they were soon shelved. The technology was too early and the world still worried about privacy. With AI having changed the rules of the game, the company announced, at the Google I/O event on May 19, that it would launch AI audio glasses into the market later this year.

They will have a camera, mic, and a Gemini personal assistant talking into your ears. If you wanted to, say, know the directions to the nearest petrol pump, you would be able to hear step-by-step directions. By just tapping on the side of the glasses or saying ‘Hey Google’ you can have any question answered about what you see before you, take photos and videos, get summaries of texts received on your phone, make and answer calls, order a taxi or access apps. A more advanced version with a display in the glasses itself is slated for launch later. The glasses are in direct competition with Meta, which has a headstart in this market. Google has partnered with fashion brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker for two snazzy designs that will be initially available to buy.
